WiFi issues disconnects etc (fixed for me)

After entering the letters what is the next step? I couldn't get screen one to come up. I did a soft reset on my phone, but I still go between 4g/wifi, it keeps going back & forth every 15-20 seconds.

This apparently won't work on Verizon Wireless. I dialed *#0011# and got their "cannot reach this number as dialed" recording.
This works on my Verizon SGS3, but you have to enter a code to unlock "Service Mode," which allows for the testing of many features on the S3, I found the trick! This works on my 4.1.2

The secret is to first type *#22745927 to get to a screen which has one entry "Hidden Service Menu Disabled" or something like that. Press that, select "Enable" and "okay" and you will be able to enter the codes you want after that.

This is described in post #114 of this very thread, just 12 posts up, along with all of the commands possible with it. There are many. But, be careful with some of these! Go forth and prosper!

These are notes I saved on my phone.

The secret is to first type *#22745927 to get to an 'enable/disable hidden menu' screen. Check enable and you're good to go.

The code *#0*# gives this testing screen

Also, the code *#0011# works to access "Service Menu" and change the Wifi Power Save to off.

"Must type manually, paste and copy doesn't work", I dialed *#0011# pressed menu button (first picture) then selected WIFI and got to the next screen (second picture). I pressed the button so it says "Off". Hit back until I was back in the homescreen. WIFI has worked to my satisfaction ever since.

But rebooting brings it back.

The Galaxy S3 hates WEP or the old WPA1 standard...and for good reason, as these are completely insecure protocols.

No worky on the S4

This does work! Thanks!

One point that I had not seen mentioned in doing these codes is that it is not necessary to press the "dial" button after entering one of the above codes. The phone responds automatically. When I did get in and dialed *#0011# I was nearly thrown by the screen showing nothing but "No Service". However, I tapped the menu location on the lower left of the display, and the menu opened with wifi at the bottom. I was able to then toggle the wifi power saving mode to OFF. I'll see how things go now. I had read that rebooting reverses this setting back to being ON. If so, that seems like an annoyance to have to keep redoing this. Might as well find out right now.

Rebooting.

OK, not only does it reset the wifi power saving back to ON, it ALSO resets the "Hidden Menu" back to being "hidden", so after a reboot you would also need to dial *#22745927 to get to a screen which has one entry "Hidden Service Menu Disabled" all over again.

I have to wonder if rebooting might "undo" ALL such changes that one might be able to do with these codes. If so it seems of limited usefulness, especially since my S3 likes to spontaneously reboot from time to time. To make matters worse, it doesn't work to create a contact with these numbers and try to "dial" them. So you would have to remember the sequence to re-do after a reboot.

Oh, so as windstrings mentions above, this "fix" is only temporary. That's too bad. I knew the menu code was. There is probably some way, with a rooted phone, to change this setting and make it stick. It's obviously not changing the boot option but just the function in memory.

By the way, I had this same problem, as I mentioned very early in this thread, but after uninstalling Battery Defender the problem went away.

It very well may be that there is some other app that could be the culprit here. I installed WiFi Manager because I really liked the toggle widget, but then I uninstalled it testing for this problem. A month later I decided to put it back on. After installing it the second time, my app/widget placement process went haywire! I couldn't place an app icon on a home page because they would start screaming by - wooshing so fast you couldn't do anything. If I tried to just move an icon, same thing. The pages would start whizzing in a chaotic manner.

Well, I uninstalled Wifi Manager and it didn't do anything. After trying other obvious things, I installed it again and then selected "Clear Data" in Application Manager and that solved the problem!

One time my phone and PC connection stopped functioning, and every possible thing there was to do didn't fix it, UNTIL I pulled the battery! I've only had this phone 2.5 months and I've already had these weird problems!

It just goes to show that some screwy things can happen on these phones, and another user installed app could've boinked yer Wifi. Try to think if you installed something about the time this started and clear the data of that app and see what happens.:smokingsomb:

I can't imagine anything I would have installed that might affect wifi, unless is would be one of the browsers I have been using. I keep looking for a reliable browser that doesn't mangle websites and provide spotty performance. I have yet to find a solution. So I use 4 different browsers based upon each of their quirks and which website I am visiting, to minimize frustrations. ;) But I don't get into optimizers and battery savers and Task Killers and that sort of stuff.

Well, that's one way to solve your browser problem! I've been browser hopping myself recently.

My point was that it may have not been something that would be obviously related to the Wifi. It could be any app, just one that was installed around the time this started.

Also, if all else fails, pull the battery. That's how I solved my USB connect problem after bangin my head against the wall for hours.:banghead: >>:p

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. However I really can't pinpoint a beginning to the wifi dropping issue on the S3, because several devices back through time have always seemed to have some issue with hanging onto a wifi signal here. Years ago I replaced an accursed Linksys WRT54G router (TWICE) due to this problem and it settled down some with my current D-Link router. Since for me it only drops wifi now and then I just put up with it and manually reconnect, rather than the hours I would have to spend starting out with a blank S3 and building one app at a time and waiting to see of the wifi were stable (or removing them one at a time for the same process). I rely on most of the apps for something, so would miss that convenience during all the testing. And , I might never actually find an app causing it. Sort of a "cure is worse than the disease" scenario. lol.

As for USB, I am not happy you are having a problem, but am relieved to find out it isn't just me. USB is a royal pain, always has been for me. There is nothing stable or reliable about it. I can't wait until it gets replaced with some other technology, which could not possibly be any worse! With Android's push to abandon USB Mass Storage being any kind of indicator, I figure it's just a matter of time.

Thanks!
