How do I install custom recovery?

Ok so how do I install a custom recovery?

Please and thank you

The recovery is tied to the kernel on this phone. So If you are on ICS (FL24 being the newest build for that) then the Agat 0.6.8 kernel referenced in the rooting guide will work for you.

If you are on build GC01 which is Jelly Bean then the one from here will work:

[KERNEL][JB][SOURCE][BST] GC01 + Agat's Recovery

Note: If you are rooting following the rooting guide and you are on GC01, then you need to use the kernel linked above for GC01. Agat 0.6.8 is for ICS and will not boot JB

I'm on FL24. I've already rooted this thing. But getting a custom recovery on this has got to be the hardest thing ever! I mean, all I want is a AOSP rom on it. Nothing fancy. Why is it so hard? My last Samsung device was a Prevail. It was a much easier process. One Odin and recovery and root installed in one fell swoop. In comparison this thing is a nightmare! I think I may have to go back to my HTC. Much less complicated!

Well if you rooted using the guide with Odin and the Agat 0.6.8 kernel, then you have recovery already. There is no unified recovery for this phone like the Prevail has. It is tied to the kernel. You MUST follow the instructions for flashing the ROM you want from its original post. IF it talks about using something like EL26 they are talking about the EL26 recovery kernel. In which case you use either Odin or the existing recovery you have to flash in that recovery kernel and then reboot into its recovery and continue with the instructions for flashing your ROM.

BTW, FL24 is an ICS ROM

Then you must have rooted using an app like framaroot which does not install a custom recovery. Install the Samsung drivers for your PC (installing kies will do this) then download the Agat 0.6.8 tar file (also linked in the rooting guide) and use Odin to flash it in folowing the Guide instructions. When you reboot you will have the tattletale triangle show on boot (that is normal) and you will have a custom revovery for that kernel. Whenever you flash a different kernel or ROM that comes with its own kernel, your recovery will change.. To get rid of the triangle you can just get the app triangle away if it bugs you...

There is no CWM for this phone? How come there's talk about it around the forum? When I boot into recovery (vol+ and Power) I get the Samsung recovery. Apply update and stuff. No CWM? Weird.

We have AGAT and ROGUE (?) custom recoveries. I believe I had CWM at some point in my ROM testing, but am not sure.

AGAT and ROGUE (?) seem to work almost exactly like CWM, and AGAT is a trusted developer. The ROGUE team I barely used, but they seem to be trusted too.

TBH, since JB I have been satisfied with my ROM and do not dig as much as I used too.

edit: I think CWM is almost a generic term now much like Kleenex (tissues), iPhone (smart phone), or Jello (gelatin).

Hey codegerm thanks a LOT for the small explanations for the builds and how the kernel is tied to the custom recovery. This thread really should either get stickied or plugged into the "all-things-root" guide. I wouldn't have written my own thread if I could've found this one earlier. Just knowing this little bit sets the foundation to move forward on everything. :D

I'm glad you found the posts useful.

As a side note I have fount that the file links on the SXTP site have been down for the Garwynn's JB kernels. If you happen to be on GC01 you can use the ones for GB27 just fine available from the repository here

Rwilco12's Android Repository - Downloads

I recommend either version 0.4.1 or 0.5.0 earlier versions had issues.

Right on. So the build is tied to the kernel number as well as the recovery. GB27 is still JB I assume. If so is there any functionality difference from GC01? Thnx for your time

The only difference between the two ROM builds are the labeling and bloat apps. GB27 is a Sprint labeled ROM and GC01 is Boost Labeled. Other than that the ROMs are identical. Garwynn developed the one kernel then just changed the labeling in it to reflect the different variants of GB27 (Sprint), GB28 (Virgin), and GC01 (Boost). It is an esthetic thing really, so when you look at your about device screen the build info matches the kernel to keep the OCD people happy lol...

I actually use GB27 and in fact use the entire GB27 ROM as I was on touch wiz JB before it was officially released, starting with the leaked build of FK23.

So with this phone we can run either sprint or boost builds since they run off the sprint towers anyway? I only ask because I ran into a virgin thread and saw that they built the rom for virgin specifically but perhaps it was just labeling and not hardware/kernel variances. Could all 3 interchange and technically run any rom? Apologies for all the questions I'm just a tweak and in sponge mode about this thing and most people haven't been as open as you.

The Virgin variant is the same hardware as is the Boost and Sprint devices. The differences will be in labeling, bloat apps, and MMS server settings (and those are easily changed). Neither Boost nor Virgin built the ROM, they customized the base JB ROM to slant to their respective company's branding. As such, we can use Sprint version with only a minor setting change for MMS to work. This is also why the GB27 recovery kernel works on all three. Yes you can run any Sprint labeled ROM on a Boost or Virgin device. Most custom ROMs developed were from the Sprint labeled one anyways (The Roms the Devs made for us that we see on XDA).

I run GB27 which is Sprint labeled, and though it looks like Sprint it is still a Boost account and works just fine. I, like many others here, remove the bloat apps that we never use anyway..

Yeah I removed the bloats already as well after backing them up and don't really care about the badging. I didn't have a recovery so just cloned everything to my pc since that's all I could do. Well, I'm all good now. What was clear as mud is now crystal clear thanks to you. I'm really digging this JB. The devs on the warp really tried hard in getting it running on a gingerbread device but ZTE never put out a clean source and it was hell. I've always ran aosp because it's all we had so I'm going to look for a touchwiz rom on JB after I find one I like. Thanks again code and I owe ya if you need a tester so let me know!

Mr Smooth lol whats up dude, good to see yea in here sir.........;):D:)

Hey hey HEY Doc! I thought that was you when I saw the name. Yeah I decided to come to the G2 instead of the G3 because I like me some tweaks and the G3 just isn't there yet. Still have the Warp but don't know what to do with it yet. Great seeing ya here bro!
