Root 2.1 Rom advice , taking the plunge

No experience with flashing / Rom on hero . I am with orange and phone locked to orange , was wondering best method and Rom to use .firmware 1.5 , kernel 2.6.27 , build 2.73.61.66. Is it simple enough to get 2.1 on my phone , am going for it tonight so any advice etc will go down a treat , I also should point out these is nothin on my phone I wish to save ie apps , pics etc

There are loads of threads active on this currently, have a read through, there is a very good guide in the all things root section, its sticky.

you will need to downgrade your build version. If you go to all thing root forum, plenty of info there.

Also read just2exy's thread on root etc as this is what I used to do mine today.

I had a few funnies but nothing serious, just had to reflash a few times and the all worked fine.

I was on same versions as you so rest assured it can be done. I flashed to Sense 2.1 and it works a treat. Well worth the time, just read thru the tutorials.

ok so i have downgraded htc rom and am now wondering what next , do i download recovery rom and flashrec next , do i download these to laptop ? am looking to install sense 2.1

Download flasrec and the recovery rom, put them both on your Sd card. Then install Flashrec on your device, and follow the instructions in the guide.

Nope mount your SD card open it on your PC drag and drop

downloaded recovery rom when try open it comes up nero ???

You dont need to open the recovery img just put it on your sd card, you use flashrec on your phone to open the recovery img

do i put modaco custom rom on sd card same time as flashrec and recovery rom

nope wait, you will need to format your sd card first, make sure you back up your sd card to your PC, dag and drop it into a new folder on your pc.

You then need to use flash rec to flash the recovery image.

Open flashrec. Then, Back up your recovery on first screen then in address bar put /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img and press flash. Typically it will be like this
/sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img

Yes, you should of put them on the root of your SD, get astro and run flash rec

long press the file and select run..I dont use astro but the general concept is the same on most apps

i use ES file explorer, and touching the flashrec file with a short press opens it... try Es instead

Don't you need to enable installation of apps without using the market first?

On the home screen press Menu, go to Settings >> Applications >> Click Unknown Sources

Now try a file manager (like jaffa I use ES File Explorer) just click on the apk file and off you go.
