iPhone users?

Anymore, this is all I have to say on the subject. If you've seen this before, you'll see it again -

http://droid-den.com/editorial/brea...e-power-of-defaults-and-intents-in-android-2/

Most of what's said about ease of use and customization rehashes memes.

Neither of those memes get down to intents and defaults. Apples don't work that way at all, so why are the real differences always missing from the astroturfing?

I've used both systems and the user-defined Android defaults makes all the difference to me.

Oh. BTW -

An iPhone is a small collection of things. There is not just one iPhone.

The constant meme that a thing just, gosh, simply beats a huge collection of things lives years in the past when there was just one iPhone. It's also pretentious.

And a few C# vs Java point by point comparisons would be most welcome also.)

I wish iOS were done in C#... but it is Objective C, as far as I'm aware.
As a long time MATLAB guy, I love me some C#.

I do believe there are things like Xamarin though which allow you to do apps in C# for iOS, Android, and Windows.

I may need to dabble in that...

Educational institutions are largely populated by left-leaning people. They embrace populism, trusting that society as a whole would not normalize a POS as "the phone to have". They want a phone that not only works, but tells the world "my phone works. you can tell because you KNOW what this is".

It's crowd sourcing. Its a statement, that you belong. That's kinda Apple's game. The center of the bell curve, +/-15%.

"My phone does some cool stuff. The camera is awesome. I don't care about overclocking, sideloading, or decompressing an archive. lol nerd."

Yep, you're right, the majority of iOS apps are written in Objectives C. I make no excuses for my comment, and I'm going to leave it as-is. :)

BTW, you may also be interested in http://www.dot42.com/ but I suspect that if you know about Xamarin, you know about that. Afair, that can save you some entry limitations. :)

Getting back to OP...

Why is it that I see some many teachers/students using iPhones?

Because it's a well-marketed, fairly polished and robust platform.. and has been for some time? That to me would be the most obvious answer.

I can't really speak to the point too much having been out of college since 2007. Certainly at that point Apple was a popular ecosystem.. if you could afford yourself a small iPod or something, and/or if you had a Macbook, made sense to get a phone in the same vein when they came out.

There's some irony if we say, "Oh iPhone users are just pretentious and showy" when making that statement in itself is pretty shortsighted and judgmental!

I dunno, who cares. Why do people drive Hondas or vote Democrat or prefer vanilla ice cream? I'm happy with Android, it works for me, and I feel like the newest devices have been quite cutting edge whereas the iPhone line has been a bit stagnant - and I don't even get into rooting or sideloading and all this and that.

People can go pick whatever experience they want, everyone's got a reason. Though to be fair I do pretty much immediately judge someone if I see "Sent from my Blackberry..." on the bottom of an email. How embarrassing :)

I've seen people buy iPhones just because they have Emoji capabilities built in. 99% positive that I wouldn't even use them if I had the option.

I'm sure Emoji is very much a cultural and regional thing, primarily in Asia, and Japan of course. With being in China I see a lot of Emoji used in IM and microblog entries, and I do use them myself. But then Emoji are only a type of smiley, used to convey a feeling or thought.

WeChat and QQ IM do Emoji as standard, both on Android and iOS.

I know of tons of people who use them on a regular basis here in Oregon, but it's usually iPhone people using the trillions of different Emoji apps available on iOS. I've noticed some solid photo apps not available for Android, but I don't think either of those would be enough to base which phone I'm purchasing on.

I have an older iPad and MacBook that both get very light use after getting into rooting and all that stuff. It's a nice $400 Netflix player for me when i'm cooking and the girlfriend likes the pinterest app when hanging around the house.

Same reason old people buy Buick--it's reliable, never changes, stale, full of gimmicks but underpowered.

FYI: i drive a Pontiac :D

Well, that's not completely true...

Moved over to iPhone few weeks ago, was android previous 4years. Liking it so far.

It really does just work well with everything.

I can see why people believe its so simple to use from the off. Yes it all looks the same and blah blah... But iOS is practically bug free and updated fairly regularly.

So is the Google Nexus Line of devices ;)

But yeah, congrats on finding something that you really like. In the end, that's what matters the most. :)

I no longer want an iphone.

I got rid of my 3gs.

I hate Apple practices.

You can't even change the fracking battery - unless you want to get a screw driver, remove the glass screen and do a triple bypass kamahema back flip - then no.

On my Defy... I just remove the back cover and wham.

New battery.

There are millions of things I hateb about apple's "iLock" or what I also call "I Lock You In!" phone.

If you want the official SDK to create and develope applications for the iCrap OS then you need to fork out 10 000 Rands just to get Mac OS X.

Yep.

You must have Mac 10.x or soomething to get the official SDK from Apple.

Ja.

You can jailbreak as I used to do - but when you try and develop for Windows (DON'T even THINK about Linux! Apple hates open source! So In your DREAMS bruizer.).

When you try and develop for Windows using stuff like "AIR Play SDK" from what I have heard and seen - you now lose a hell of a lot of functionality from the official SDK from crApple themselves.

So in a nutshell this is what Apple wants you to do -

Either sell your kidney (Take your pick! ;)) on the black market or whatever and BUY BUY BUY a Mac OS 10 device to run the official SDK on.

Ja.

You "CAN" develop applications on Windows (the last time I checked linux was 1 hell of a laugh!) but then you lose so much damn functionality that your games or other resource intense software is now some what dumbfounded because Tim Cook wants a new mansion.

I don't want to play this game.

So I will never buy another Crapple product ever again until I see a serious change in their dodgy practices.

I will stick with my waaaaay more free and open source device - android.

You can also get Ubuntu on your Android if you have got the right requirements.

And even the new upcoming Fire Fox OS.

Looking damn awesome - it seems there are already ports in progress:

How to port Motorola Defy+ to Firefox OS - Tutorial | Firefox OS Guide

Also an iphone costs a freaking arm and a leg.

too much money.

like Revenant Ghost said - for a fraction of the price you can actually get the same.

And I actually take it 10 steps further - for the same price you can actually get 10 times the phone for the same money.

Apple = Gucci Shoes.

What I am saying by that is they are into "style" and what looks "cool" not what is the best or the most efficient.

Am I telling what people to buy?

No.

If you are happy with your iCrap then so be it.

But me - I want it to be open - not iLocked.

LOL @ "Apple = Gucci Shoes" ....yes!

Yeh they look beautiful, and only available in two sizes. Unfortunately I have large feet and the Apple "glass slippers" don't fit me.. So no Apple or Gucci for me. Oh yeh and they're exceedingly expensive as well.

I suspect Apple in South Africa, like the PRC, Apple is basically considered a luxury brand. Meaning one has to quite well monied to own their products. Also just like Gucci, there's a heck of a lot of fakes around, along with a very high brand whore aspect.

Around here, Apple iPhones are on the low end. not only are Android phones like the Note and GS4 like $100-200 more than an iPhone unsubsidized, but iPhones tend to sell to the more blue-collar people. you'll see them on a hunter's or coal worker's belt, while Notes and other Android phones (the Sammies and Motorolas dominate) are on the upper class people's belts, with the teen girls being another target of cheaper prepaid Android models (AFAIK, no iPhones for Virgin or GoPhone just yet)
