Maybe this is a tangent...

Obama steps up military aid to Syrian rebels | Political Headlines | Comcast

Somewhat relevant though. Obama is apparently ready to arm Syrian "rebels" (that could include hardline Islamists trying to hijack the opposition to Assad) while pushing initiatives to disarm American citizens at home at the same time. The whole thing is kind of depressing.

You do realise that Obama, along with Europe have dilly dallied on this for two years now?

Obama was far too cautious, and while I probably would have been too, he was pushed - shamed into taking action.

Quite frankly, Assad wont stop until he feels that the West could topple him. Turkey has had to deal with an awful lot for the past two years, and all of NATO has a responsibility to help out on that front also.

Anyway, I find this idea of Obama pushing to arm Islamists willy-nilly to be ridiculous. I don't mind arming religious democrats against a tyrannical regime, however there is obviously zero intention to give Al Qaeda surface to air missiles.

It is not our responsibility to save the world. Hell, we follow that policy with Central Africa...which has been ripping itself apart for years (rape, pillage and famine capital of the world that nobody talks or cares about).

I don't see them sending Stingers or Javelin missile systems either...but even if they just make arrangements to ship 7.62

Indeed, the lack of action regarding the Central African Republic in particular has been quite sad. Too far from any allies I guess. But this non-intervention has been a terrible policy for them.

This is the start of WWIII. Look how things are lining up. Russia and Iran are backing Assad. USA and Europe are backing the rebels. This will grow much, much larger than Syria. Looking at the big picture of more than Syria things don't look good.

I think you need to stop reading infowars.

If Angola didn't cause WWIII, this won't. The major problem (aside from the millions of Syrians) right now is Lebanon, then Iraq, and possibly Jordan and Israel.

Yeah, this guy would appear to have far more information about the rebels and their affiliations than, say the British government who are still trying to work out which groups have al Qaeda leanings and which don't.

Hard to say since the rebels are Al Quida

SOME of the rebels have declared that they are linked to al Qaeda, others have - so far - been more moderate and even broadly pro-western. The big issue with NOT providing these rebels with aide and weapons though, is that they are then forced to associate themselves with whoever will provide them .. and to make whatever ideological compromises the providers demand.

The west may have left this decision too late - it does look like a lose-lose now: either Russian/Iranian backed Assad or al Qaeda backed rebels. The Machiavellians will no doubt be looking for ways to keep the war going for years so both sides weaken themselves .. think the Iran/Iraq war of the 80s .. :(

try to find out the real reasons behind wars what USA and Russia are doing they are protecting there interests. As for africa its not hidden how local rebel groups are being armed and pit against each other My brother served in UN forces and he was shocked how Super powers are playing with lives of poor africans. Arming rebels In Syria would do nothing it will only prolong there stand off. Until or unless there is a military intervention..like USA wants oil or wants to protect its interests and would do anything for it even allow its soldiers to rape and kill innocent people same is going to be done by Russia. Not only Russia has a Lucrative arms deal but also a Gas pipe line project worth millions of dollars so it is protecting its interest...When you invade someone take away there freedom they are sure to become radicals just ask a father who lost his 10 years old son to a drone attack he wont be a peaceful man he will burn for revenge why this so called radicalism was not present 40 years ago.

That military intervention looks likely and to have "just a little bit of war" is like "I'm only a little bit pregnant mom".

After Syria chemical allegations, Obama considering limited military strike - The Washington Post

"President Obama is weighing a military strike against Syria that would be of limited scope and duration, designed to serve as punishment for Syria

He has to do something now, he backed himself into a corner with the "red line" comments. Hopefully it is limited to some cruise missile strikes

Sadly, that red line comment could turn out to be a very expensive mistake. The gas attack on the 21st (whoever's responsible) appears to have been a deliberate provocation specifically designed to drag the US into the war - ironically, on what is seen in the region as the side of al Qaeda. It cannot be coincidence that the attack happened as the UN inspectors arrived in country and a mere 15 minutes from their hotel.

On the face of it, that would seem to lend credence to the Russian claim that it was the rebels what done it however, you have to remember that Assad's main supporter in the region is Iran.

The Iranians have enjoyed a decade fighting and winning a proxy war in Iraq against their greatest enemies, the Saudis and the US. That war recently ended and doubtless, elements in Iran would like nothing better than another crack at their long time foes, particularly when proxy war has proved so successful and cost so little thus far.

Another of Assad's main backers is a Russia run by a cold war relic with a cold war hatred of the west and doubtless some very hard feelings about the Russian experience in Afghanistan and the US's involvement in that: I'm guessing he enjoyed seeing the US getting it's ass kicked in two countries over the last decade and that he, too wouldn't be averse to a little more of the same ..

Then, as I've said elsewhere, the Syrian war is between two western foes: Assad and al Qaeda. The western Machiavellian calculation has to be: long may it continue. Assad is currently winning - a bit of indirect help for the rebels would be quite timely.

.. so basically, what I'm saying is, good luck limiting western involvement to a few missiles :(

It will get really expensive if anybody makes good on their promises to attack Israel in retaliation. Expensive for all of us on a personal level as well, oil prices are already spiking without even a missile fired so far...

I believe the oil price issue is over an unrelated mass strike in Libya!

Anyway, it looks like even Sweden and Germany are convinced that it was Assad, wonder what part those intercepted calls played in influencing all this.
