ATT Unlimited (Grandfathered) or 3gb

Advice -

I currently have unlimited (grandfathered) with ATT. In the past 2 years - I have only gone over 3GB twice (and not by much).

I have loads of Amazon credit and am going to upgrade my phone. However - if I go via Amazon, I will lose unlimited.

To keep or not to keep unlimited is the question. I'm leaning towards keeping because you never know in the future what services will use more data. But on the flip side - unlimited might not be grandfathered forever, it does save me $250 out of pocket to use Amazon and I'm on WiFi a lot.

Thoughts?

I would think about what AT&T wants you to do. Then do the opposite. Just to spite them. I hate those guys.

(In all honesty, I understand that if you are planning for the future by keeping unlimited. But you can't predict the future. If you can save a good amount of money now, that is something you know and is real.

Perhaps you can sell the Amazon credit to a friend or buy an item and resell it on ebay. Then use that cash to upgrade your phone with AT&T and not lose your contract?)

Over time it's a safe bet that our data usage will increase as more stuff can be done with our phones.

So if you use tons of data - for that reason I'd stay with the unlimited plan as long as possible.

True - on the flip side - who is to say that it will occur within the timeframe that ATT also allows the grandfathered unlimited. They could theoretically stop any time and one's next upgrade could be a forced data plan change. It's within their right.

On the flip side - if I do switch - I'm not tied to ATTs weird rules about tethering plans and/or if a new service becomes "only" available to those without unlimited data.

Just throwing it out there as counter

If only we could predict the future :)

Well in the short term you save $250 with Amazon (while loosing unlimited data) and are on WiFi a lot, so without knowing what lies ahead this could be better... as long as you have WiFi access.

I suppose it is a moot point now, since you can't use your Amazon card, but here is my 2 cents anyway.
Staying with unlimited is fine, especially if you are able to use Wifi, since if you go past a certain data usage amount, AT&T will throttle you, AND if you always buy your phones from another source since you can not get the discount prices on phones, and keep unlimited.
On the other hand, getting the 3GB plan is also fine, especially if you are able to use Wifi, since you will probably never go over that 3GB, never be throttled, and will now be able to use the discounted prices on phone upgrades.

I do not work for them but when upgrading via web, store, amazon or any other way I always call 611 and let them know my plans they note my account so my unlimited stays. If something goes wrong with the transfer its noted and they have to override it and return my unlimited. Done this many times just last November with the gs3 for $0.96 at Sam's got the phone for $1.04 tax included my data plan moved with me no issues just told sams my account had a note to keep unlimited sales person did override on the package my unlimited still surfing away

Just thought id share been a customer since 1995 bellsouth days maybe that helps too
