Root DUMB QUESTION: CM7 support from other companies

THE SHORT VERSION: My Triumph is running the 2013-03-03 build of MTDEV-CM7. Are third-party software vendors (in this case, Instagram) "cool" with supporting CM7 phones? Or, if I email them, will they just tell me to get lost?

THE LONG VERSION: Every version of Instagram after 3.42 crashes my Triumph, which is running CM7 2013-03-03. Specifically, if I click the "Post Pic" button and choose a picture from the Photo Gallery, the phone reboots just before the page with all the filters comes up. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, wiped the data (from the app's page), wiped the cache, wiped Dalvik cache... everything I can think of, but EVERY SINGLE VERSION of Instagram after 3.4.2 crashes my phone in the same way.

Since my current install of CM7 was getting a bit long in the tooth, I wiped it a couple of weeks ago and installed the 31JUL build of Paranoid Android. The latest version of Instagram worked fine on PA: no issues whatsoever. But I had several other issues with PA (and was going on vacation and needed a stable phone), so I wiped it and installed the 2013-03-03 build of CM7 again.

I did the usual (backed up the phone, wiped phone, wiped cache and Dalvik) and installed the CM7 ROM. When the phone booted up, I skipped the account setup, entered my WiFi settings, downloaded Instagram from Google Play... and the phone rebooted. This was an absolute virgin install of CM7 and Instagram crashed it! So I restored my previous CM7 backup (with Instagram 3.4.2) and everything works fine now... but now I'm getting "you need to upgrade Instagram" messages (and I really, really miss being able to hit the "update all" button in Google Play).

So if you guys wanna help me troubleshoot it, that'd be great. But what I really wanna know is if I cut and paste this message and send it to Instagram support... are they gonna tell me to get lost, or will they help?

Thanks!

Tuna

Most of the times I have reported issues to companies they seem to not care and blame the user side of things. This was when I was on Stock and on CM7. I can only hope that instgram cares more than the other companies I have delt with.

I haven't experienced any push back due to running CM7 from app devs when reporting issues.

More to the point...
I just installed Instagram to test on my CM7 installation and it seems to work just fine.

If I may suggest something that might help:
Try installing QuickPic from the playstore and uninstall Gallery.

Thanks - I'll try that, thankfish! Don't know if it will help though.

For the record, I submitted a bug report to Instagram *and* sent a tweet to their support team, but haven't heard anything back yet. Awesome service!

I don't know if it will help either, but it works on CM7 and the only difference is that I always uninstall Gallery and use QuickPic instead.

Well, I finally got around to playing with my phone tonight, and I thought I'd fixed it. But no.

I deleted the (Instagram) cache and updated the app to 4.1.2. The phone still crashed after selecting the picture from the Gallery, but before the page with all the filters comes up. So I tried the QuickPic app mentioned in the thread, and it seemed to work, as I was able to fully edit and post three pictures. I then started on a fourth pic, but got to the filters page and went back to my home screen, thinking everything was OK (and football was on!).

I tried editing a new pic a little while later, but the phone crashed again... after the picture cropping, but before the filters page. In the past, Instagram has acted "wonky" if you abandoned a picture before posting (like, it will always try to load the abandoned picture instead of the new picture you'd selected). So I deleted the cache and data (for the Instagram app) and was able to post another pic. But I've tried five times since then, and it always reboots my phone just as the filters page comes up.

I still haven't heard anything from Instagram, soooooo... any further suggestions?

OK, I'm still playing with it, and I noticed something odd: the app works as expected if I select any picture that is NOT in the "DCIM" folder (examples: Downloads, Reddit, Instagram). It only crashes when I attempt to load any picture in the DCIM folder.

I just tried running Fix Permissions in CWM Recovery, and was able to get the app to load the filters on a test picture I just took (so, inside DCIM) but it rebooted the phone after I clicked the "Next" button.

After the reboot, I was able to successfully post a picture from my "Downloads" folder, but the app crashed the phone again once I chose a picture that was in the DCIM folder, but not taken with the phone's camera (it's a bunch of pics from a concert I took with a Canon P&S' I just copied them to DCIM to show off).

I think I'm on to something. If I knew anything about Android's inner workings (or programming generally), I might could actually fix this.
