Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

Riding my bike, and when crossing a street, I almost get hit because the driver was on the phone. There should be a federal law against using phones while driving. Like you use it while driving, you loose the contract with your phone.

I know California has that law...

Text Messaging Law Effective January 1 2009 Cellular Phone Laws Effective July 1 2008

Too bad it isn't a federal law. I had a few near misses myself when crossing the street. Also seeing people using the cell phone while driving is one of my greatest pet peeves.

No offense but I think it's actually the opposite. The bigger it is the worst Public Transport gets.

None taken. But you know it also depends on multiple factors, such as the layout of the city and how much of the public transit system is covering it.

Unfortunately, Nashville is definitely lacking in the latter and is not pedestrian friendly at all. And since I don't leave town that often, I have no use for Greyhound.

Dutch law: a 290$ fine for using your mobile while driving. And police is strict.

Get caught using your mobile phone illegally whilst driving in NSW and you'll incur a $225 fine and three demerit points. You're only allowed to use them for phone calls if you have them in a hands free cradle, unless you pull over and stop.

The day after finishing night shift grinds my gears.

I was wide awake at 5AM today and couldn't get back to sleep. Come 10AM, I'll start to feel groggy again, bad tempered and irritable. Will I be able to nap though? Of course not!

Same story every single time.

I did so much shift work in my younger days that I can now sleep whenever and wherever I am if I'm tired, unless the temperature and humidity are high.

Rotating shifts are the worst though...

Coming out of a store and finding someone sitting on your motorcycle. WTF?! And then they say, "Is this yours? I really like this bike." Well it ain't your bike so WHY ARE YOU ON IT? Sometimes choking someone until their eyeballs pop out doesn't sound like such a bad idea. Good thing I'm not a violent person. But I'm definitely reconsidering that belief.

We found half a tour bus of Koreans taking pics and posing with ours. I think we might have been in western New Mexico. They liked Japanese bikes, but couldn't afford them in Korea.

We also had a tour bus full of Japanese surround it. Overjoyed to see a Kawasaki, I suppose. Vulcan Nomad 1500.

me answering work phone: "Thank you for calling [insert name of my workplace], how may I help you today?"
person on phone: "What time do you close?"
me: "At which of our locations, ma'am?"
person on phone: [very long pause]
me: "We have 9 stores, ma'am, which location do you need the closing time for?"
person on phone: "Um, Blah Blah, Virginia."
me: "We don't have any [name of store] in Virginia, ma'am..."
person on phone: "Y'all don't have any Loan Smarts in Virginia?!?! Y'all have an office right here in the town I live in..."
me: "Ma'am, this isn't Loan Smart."
person on phone: "Well I don't know how in the world I would have y'all's number."
me: "Because someone who works for Loan Smart put our number on their business card."
person on phone: [still mumbling and carrying on about some sort of stupid shit, doesn't believe we're not Loan Smart]
me: "Ma'am, if we were Loan Smart we wouldn't lie about that because we'd want to take your payment, ok?" CLICK

DANG. Just when I thought people couldn't possibly act any more brain dead than they usually do... proved wrong again by someone with no common sense. And this happens ALL THE TIME with these people. Even people who sound like they should have more than 2 brain cells. A COMPANY WHO LOANED YOU MONEY ISN'T GOING TO LIE ABOUT WHO THEY ARE. THEY ARE GOING TO WANT TO TAKE YOUR LOAN PAYMENT. Good gawd.

Sorry, but the problem is that a lot of people are just lazy assholes who don't give a shit about putting out the effort to multitask effectively, even when it involves safety. And a lot of people also simply don't have the ability to multitask well, let's be honest here. You know these people... they're the same ones who shouldn't be allowed to chew gum and walk at the same time.

Talking on a phone while driving is the same concept as eating while driving (talk about distracting), or having an involved conversation with someone in the car with you, or fiddling with your radio/CD/MP3 player while driving, or messing with your coffee cup, or simply doing anything that takes your attention from the road. When you really *think* about it, simply talking while driving should be much less distracting than, say, fooling with your CD player, which requires actually taking your eyes from the road.

Texting while driving however, aka taking the time to type on a tiny computer while also operating a motor vehicle, is just inexcusable. And unless someone is a fool, simply talking on the phone while driving (you don't even have to look to dial the number or press any keys now, it's called voice commands and a headset) should not be put in the same category as texting. Unless you are super-rigid and don't EVER do ANY of the other aforementioned non-phone-related, super-distracting things like fiddle with your radio/CD player/MP3 player while you are yourself operating a motor vehicle.

The fact is that cell phones are still relatively new, while talking to someone in the passenger seat or messing with the radio or being TOTALLY distracted by your kids in the backseat are NOT relatively new things. And people tend to be freaked out by change and like to blame things that are new when they should just be blaming human nature and people who can't multitask worth a damn.

The guy who almost hit you was simply an asshole who wasn't paying attention to what he was doing. And I'd bet money that he doesn't pay much attention when he's driving and NOT talking on the phone.

So please don't blame the freaking phone, for godsake. If he isn't someone who is good at doing 2 things at once, then he shouldn't be driving while doing ANYTHING ELSE. THAT'S ON HIM.

As I mentioned earlier: that also includes eating, drinking coffee, messing with the radio, etc. And I have yet to hear a single person rant about someone doing any of those things. I mean, people in the town I live in can't even effing manage to use their turn signals on a regular basis or drive in a reasonable manner in general. I've almost been hit countless times while walking and driving... by motorists who WERE NOT on their cell phones.

Okay... done... I promise. ;)

This brings me to a video I seen from this really great youtube channel, Which sadly is no longer active.
Don't Text and Drive - YouTube

Texting and driving is like 24 in the list that causes accidents according to his research.
Okay, talking on the phone, with voice commands, and not holding the phone or anything, thats better, but when you are holding a phone, and having a real conversation with someone on the phone, then you are less focused on the road. The more you multi-task in your life, the worse you become at it, its been Psychologically proven.
So, those who think they can play with the radio, text, while petting a cat and drive at the same time, your way off.

This is why I really want the Google self driving car on the streets. Some people should not be on the road because they just cant drive the right way, and have their full attention on the road. The Google self driving car will save hundreds of thousands of lives every year, that is if everyone gets one.

I like to think I am a less than stupid person, but even though I use hands-free, I still hang up on my wife when I encounter traffic-- mayhaps being male makes me less able to multitask, but I just can not concentrate on driving and converse with my wife at the same time.

At least when there is a person in the seat next to you, they can see when the you need to pay more attention to driving than to whatever topic is at hand (or should that be at tongue?).

Pedestrians have this problem, too.

Oh, and we also have problems with bicyclists running us off the sidewalk. We'll share nicely if you do, OK, please?

In Minneapolis, it is illegal for bicycles to use the sidewalk.

But we are still voted the bike-friendliest city in the U.S.

What grinds my gears?
The mind boggling amount of reading due this semester!

:afraid: (and why do we not have the jawdrop smilie?)

Uh, how long is your semester again? Four or five years?

Many of those books will be used for two years (I hope). Our semester is about 4mo long.

Don't ever think an RN didn't work to get where they are, even if they only have the two-year degree.
