Root Download mode, no mobile drive?

I'm trying to root my brother's MT phone. For some reason, when I go in to download mode (while unplugged, yes) and then I plug the phone in, the mobile drive doesn't show up on my computer. I already had a problem before with trying to get his SD card folder to come up on my computer while his phone was in and plugged on to my USB port. So we bought a card reader. But now it's seems useless with this mobile drive problem, I can't get CWM in the phone. He's pretty mad about it. :/ I know it's not my USB ports because I had rooted my old MT successfully and I use my new phone on the USB port all the time.

I presume you are trying to replace the recovery.img. It is possible that the phone's port is bad, or the cable. I haven't tried to mount the /mobile partition, but I would think it's possible. It would be the same as mounting other partitions.

If I remember and have time I'm make a little write up for you. If you can, look into how to make a mount point and how to mount a partition in Linux. Then read the write up on how to symlink the SU files to ROOT without a computer.

And above all, have fun, but be careful!

Yes, I'm trying to replace recovery.img. The cable is fine, it was practically a brand new one that I rarely even use. I suspect there could be something wrong with the port also. I'm kind of angry about this, because I bought it on eBay where the seller never bothered to tell me that not only is the port bad but he also replaced some parts, including the screen. Grrr.

I have no idea how to mount partitions. The times I've rooted, I just follow other people's directions. I'd really appreciate a write up, that would be awesome and SO helpful. Otherwise, I will be too afraid of messing things up so I wouldn't give it a try based solely on my own research. I bought this phone myself, as a gift for my brother, and I cannot afford to brick it and have to buy him another one.

Tried it again now it says

cp: can't stat 'sdcard/recovery.img': No such file or directory

I do have recovery.img in the SD card.

Edit: Scratch this, I got it to work after I deleted and re-added the recovery.img to the SD card. I now have CWM. Thank you SO for your help!
