Can I make (proper) phone calls on this thing?

Can I make proper mobile phone calls (not VoIP Google Talk etc.) on this?

I see it has Samsung's 'Phone' app software, and in some photos I see the missed call icon in the notification bar; but I can't see any reviews addressing this issue one way or another.

There are 3 versions of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition - an LTE model, a 3G model, and the other is WiFi only.

If you want to make calls do not get the WiFi only edition.

Thanks Kate,

Seems the 3G/LTE models do have phone software, can't see it mentioned in any of the hands-on reviews etc, which is a little odd as it seems a unique feature for a tablet??

That is presumably because most people would not normally look to make standard phone calls on a 10 inch tablet, and so if the feature even exists on the 3G/LTE version, which (I would think) adds data and not necessarily phone calls (which was 2G/GSM), it would be not be considered a headline feature on the tablet of that size. I can only imagine that making phone calls on it would be awkward and odd, unless you use a hands-free kit.

Have a look on Youtube at some of the videos taken at the Samsung Unpacked at IFA in Berlin this last week and you'll see that the tablet (and the version on display was the LTE one) does not have an earpiece.

I would assume calls would be made through a headset or as speaker-phone; I can't imaging holding anything bigger than a 7" up as a handset.

While at my local Best Buy I noticed a 6 foot display Samsung phone poster, now maybe a 6 foot Samsung "BIG" phone would solve the phone calling problem. :rolleyes:

Not sure I follow your 'reasoning'; I don't think size is this issue, only what can be done with it.

Myself I want my phone to fit into a pocket not a back pack.

This is a tablet, not a phone, so you have nothing to worry about. Having the connectivity needed to make hone calls doe snot make it a phone.
