nj02, any more thoughts after sitting on it for another day?
Not much.
Back is a fingerprint magnet. Knew this going in.
Speaker volume is actually better than I initially thought..........but, its very easy to cover up the opening and muffle the sound. Just something to be aware of.
Phone call quality is fine, no issues there. The knock-knock feature has worked fine for me. BTW, you don't need to knock hard with your knuckle. Just a quick fingernail tap works great.
Battery life is fully unknown right now, however I'm going to suspect it pretty awesome. My first day usage was a-typical as I was playing with it all day, downloading tons of apps through LTE, etc. Screen almost always on with me fiddling with it, but also trickle charging here and there through vehicle adapter.
Today seems a little more typical. I've been unplugged for 3hrs and have 97% with estimated time of 89hrs remaining.
LTE reception seems to be around -90dB. Doesn't list ASU. Reception seems better than GNex, but some buildings I did lose signal. I'm going to try in some other areas to see if I get a signal where I knew the GNex didn't. Unknown 3G-4G handoff yet, but I'm sure the Snapdragon 800 is mature enough to handle that fine.
Very fast. Virtually no lag. Only stutter I saw was when I was downloading and installing 50+ apps.
Amazon app store is loaded natively. Apps installed through Amazon don't have to multiple confirm install/third party warnings I saw previously. Plus 3rd party app installs wasn't enabled in security settings. Don't know if this is new, or something that I've been unaware of.
I did have one strange issue with WiFi. After being out all day, I came home and tried to connect to my router. It found the router, I put in my password and it tried to connect. Tried obtaining an IP address and it indicated poor reception. I sat next to the router and it got the same result and didn't connect and timed out. Bad WiFi reception would have been a deal breaker for me. I ended up deleting the connection/forgetting the password and redid the connection. In 5 sec, it was all up and running. Range seems good. So chalk that up to a glitch or something, maybe even on my routers end.
Google Wallet will NOT install. Not available in play store, nor will most versions install. Finally got a version sideloaded, but a notice from Google that this hardware isn't supported yet.
Software customizations are a love/hate relationship.
Pro's:
- With a screen this size, they changed the icon grid to 5x5.
- Home screen shortcuts, not only customizable, but able to fit up to 7 across.
- Different transition effects.
- Notification bar customizations
(basically above is launcher related, and I'm OK with LG's launcher)
- Answer call screens: the good. Call comes in, you get three buttons to chose from. Answer call, ignore call, and send message. Not revolutionary, but nice.
- Can group more icons than stock, and can customize.
Con's:
- Notification bar clutter (although you can somewhat clean up)
- Inability to hide apps and/or widgets.
- Default app list arranged by install date, although you can change to alphabetical.
- Inability to fully customize soft menu buttons. There's a few presets, but you can't add multi-task button. In it's place you get a permanent menu button, along with the typical home and back. You can also add a notification drop down button, but that just seems stupid. However, you can get into the multitask screen with a long press of home.
- Answer call screens: the bad. The incoming call screen is different based on whether your phone is locked at the time of the call. For locked phones, you need to swipe to answer, for unlocked you need to just push the button. No issue with that. However, they swapped the position of the buttons (answer and message) between the two screens. Just poor design practice. Button position should be the same. If you get used to a selection of the left, you should make sure that selection is always on the left.
- Ringtones/notifications suck.
- Icon grouping can be difficult with drag/drop sometimes, and are uglier compared to stock. Fortunately, you can group in other ways which is actually far easier.
Neutrals (don't know if I like/use or not):
- Notification light shines red when charging, green when charged.
- Q slide apps. Basically it's multiple window multitasking for certain apps.
That's all I can think of now. I'll update as I think of things.
