Under your bed
OK so here I am, I have my upgrade, I decided not to leave AT&T and in all likelihood I am buying a phone on Friday.

A month ago I was SET on the Moto X heck 2 weeks ago I was SET on the Moto X. But on Saturday my wife upgraded, got her an HTC ONE and I got to play with it some and wow it's a nice phone. Now add to that that Best Buy just started offering a BLUE HTC ONE for ATT and ...wow makes it a tough call.

Also in the past 2 weeks the LG G2 came out, and I have gotten to play with it at Best Buy as well. Also a blazing fast phone, and not as HUGE as I thought it would be. In fact both the G2 and ONE are about the same size as my Atrix HD.

NOW, I have NOT had a lot of opportunity to play with the X but I do love the feel of it in my hand. At least not like the One or the G2. (where it's a live phone not tethered to a cable)

I AM TORN, and I want some feedback from anyone that has used the X for a while I want your honest feedback. I am scared about supply issues (since I would do motomaker and 32GB version) and I am scared that there will be bugs galore like the original Atrix 4G.

HELP ME OUT, anyone have opinions, anyone get the chance to use all three of these phones?

Any input helpful.
:D

I currently have the HTC one it's GREAT build is awesome runs smooth but my upgrade is October and my wife needs a new phone so she will get my one but that leaves me the choice get a red or black HTC one or Moto x used it and feels good looks good and runs smoother then the one...my thing is every one says HTC ones built quality looks way better but then they usually put a case on it so now comes down to what you think feels better moto is known for awesome radios so reception should be great on the moto x then try it out see if you like the almost stock feel of android or sense so you really need to give em a test run

I'm of the opinion now that the phones are all getting to the point that people should start going with what feels good and looks good to them. I know the HTC One and some of the others along with the new Droids are all good phones. Personally, I like the Moto X for style, appearance and function. It just feels good.

I think this is a pretty easy choice for you. It sounds like you WANT to like the Moto X, but you are drawn to the One and the G2. In my opinion, I dont know how you stand the G2. Those back buttons are quite stupid. And their attempt to be different just makes it weird. In my mind, that phone is out of the question.

Look, the Moto X is not the flashiest phone, its not the brightest display, it doesn't have crazy specs ( although you can't tell from everyday use). The phone works. Its a perfect size. It runs near stock OS. And the features it utilizes are really useful. Unlike Samsung where they seem to be just for show, and not really something you use daily. Active Display is a feature I use all the time, and I cant imagine not using it on a phone now. Plus, the battery life is great.

The One is going to impress you in other areas. Based on how you worded this post, It sounds like you have already made up your mind. But I could be wrong.

I am a Moto fanboy. I can admit this.

I want to want the Moto X with no question, which I was wanting it without question a few weeks ago. But since then, the doubt has crept in. It was nice to hear someone with the ONE say they wanted the X, I do LOVE the size of the X, that much is for sure. just struggling with the stat geek I used to be.

Once you USE the moto X for a couple days, stats won't mean a thing. That is how I was. I got the Galaxy S3 at launch. Because of "stats".

Statistically, the Moto X has 100% more active notifications than the G2 or HTC One! :p:)

Seriously though I find it shockingly impressive that the Moto X keeps up with the HTC One and SGS4 in benchmarks (especially 3D stuff).

But the reality of the Moto X: it's butter smooth and really flys (partly due to have a great graphics processor in it).

The only place I feel like the G2 wins *might* be battery life. However be careful of that Anandtech report where they only tested it on 3G. LTE sucks battery like a rockstar groupie. I suspect half the reason the G2 pulled so far ahead of the pack was due to that anomaly in testing methodology.

At this point there is really only 2 things holding me back.

1. Price : Storage ratio (to get the 32GB X phone is $249 bucks) HTC One 32GB is $149 on sale and G2 is $199 for the 32GB. (why Moto why must you do this)

2. Camera - I need to know what the camera is capable of...in real world usage, and I am not finding anything I can rely on review wise. (Based on how I would use a camera) Both HTC and LG have great cameras from everything I have read and seen, moto has gotten poor reviews.

So is it a jerk move to go get a Moto X 16 GB at Best Buy and test drive it for a couple days and then return it for my money back and get the 32 GB online if I like it?

The camera is good, nothing spectacular though. But it's a smartphone camera -- it will never have the optical lens of real camera. I have a DSLR for the really good stuff. And I don't really care how good some people say the camera on the iphone is, my DSLR smokes it every time.

And from all the review sites I have seen -- all the current gen flagship Android phones have a "pretty good" camera. And I have seen pics for each that were good and bad.

But the Moto X does have the great "start-camera-shake-gesture" and it's fast, (really fast) to take pics. This is one of the best (sometimes forgotten) tricks of photography. Take A LOT OF PICS. They use very little storage and it is easy to find the good one later :)

I personally don't like the "go get, then return" thing, but that is your own moral choice, not for me to make or judge.

I am coming from a 32GB Gnex and am worried about the storage too (I only had the option of 16GB). However I really needed a new phone, and I have started using Google's music service. And I tether daily just about --but still never seem to manage more than ~2-3GB a month.

I would expect the price drop wont come until October or November though. Shortly after an N5 launch. But I suspect I might be trying an N5 too but I get discounts (trade in) through my job.

So for me, it was almost an easy decision. I didn't listen to all the music I had on my device anyways, (I never could fit my collection on the Gnex) And I had some spare room in my data plan if I went with TMO.

Maybe I will try and take some pics in a few.

One thing I can say for sure, this thing smokes my Gnex speed-wise :) Even the WiFi has better range.

well sure a DSLR will smoke any camera phone just based on the lens options alone not to mention the more advanced sensors. Although I will be interested to see how the detachable smartphone lenses Sony is making stack up.

Compared to its own brethren though, I was not impressed with the Moto X. I played around with one for a few days and I was always annoyed with the amount of noise and color accuracy issues I ran into (even for a Smartphone cam). It was weird too because sometimes it would take a nice shot and then two seconds later the next shot would be out of focus and washed out. Not sure what was going on there but it happened enough to get very annoying.

I was playing around with a LG G2 the other day and wow what a camera. the OIS is really well done and there are no issues with color accuracy, focus etc and it even did fairly well in lower light situations indoors. Heres to hoping the G2 OIS cam makes it into the Nexus 5, if it does that could be a very well rounded phone for the price esp considering it comes in frame smaller then the Nexus 4.

I hope so too, but find it highly unlikely. We know the battery is different and that Nexus phones in the past have been made from slightly lower-end versions of their branded counterparts.

Google tends to let manufacturers keep a feature or two for themselves. (which makes sense).

GNex -> SGS3
N1 -> HTC DINC
N4 -> Optimus G
NS -> ? can't remember

Though for me, stock Android is a huge win that usually outweighs any drawbacks.

If you want a phone with a nice camera, you are not considering the Moto X at all. This is obvious. And anyone who knows about smartphone cameras, knows that Motorola always falls short.

You have to let the camera auto focus, which usually means holding it place a couple seconds longer then normal. Also, always have the HDR mode on. The biggest thing is the camera performs VERY poorly in low light. If the lighting is good the camera actually takes very nice photos. Ill upload a photo I took.

I have never had huge complaints with Motorola cameras overall. The Defy and Atrix 4G were quite capable. The Atrix HD has been a bit sub par. I went to AT&T on lunch, and I sniffed around, took some pics with the demo phone, pawed on the sample case backs of many colors, looked at cases they had in store ... all in all, as before I LOVE THE MOTO X. Plus I KNOW Moto call quality and antennae quality (speaking of, is the X the ONLY phone currently available that has a dual LTE antennae set up?) I really think I'd be happy with an X of my own all dressed up like I like from the Motomaker. BUT THE PRICE STILL BITES MY @$$ - that I have to pay $50-$100 more than two comparable phones with 32GB of storage is simply OUTRAGEOUS! :argh:

I completely disagree with you in most things you say. Because what the phone offers, is completely different then any phone on the market offers today. The One and the G2 were built to impress people who read the specs. They are kinda boring and their stock software for the most part is pretty horrible. I am tired of the cell phone "battle". And the Moto x, for what if offers, is worth the price. It may be hard to believe, but when you use it, you just know it was worth it. Plus, the phone cost the same amount to build as any major smartphone on the market.To say its not equal to other phones is not really a good argument.

I don't know if you are on Verizon or not, but there are ways to get the X cheaper. If you order online, you can use VERIZON30 to get it for $140, or if you order through Comcast (doesn't matter if you are a Comcast customer), you will get a $100 Visa gift card sent to you, so it essentially drops the price to $100. Personally, I am waiting until Motomaker comes to VZW because I really want 32GB, plus my own color combo. I also hear the price will drop $100 around that time, so with the Comcast deal (good thru 12-31), it ends up at $50, unless you want a wood back and tack on another $50. I know, too many damn decisions, but that's the one I am sticking with...for now!

I have this phone. got it within the first 4 days from motomaker. I am not the type to root and do roms (although i read all about it) i have spent the last few years on the forums reading what all the pros have to say. I wanted to make sure i had a phone that did not bog down. I may not do everything most people here do, but i do want a phone to work. I too was not sure about this phone cause like most people i put all my stock in the specs. I loved the fact that this phone was assembled here and i was supporting american jobs. That was really my selling point. I stressed and worried that i made the right decesion (cause i had been eyeballing the HTC one) I bought the X for me and the wife. I use mine phone way more than she does and she just trust my judgment since she found out the hard way that the phone she choose were nothing but kiddie phones. They would never hold up and bog down within a few months. Choosing the X was the best decesion i could have made. It is so smooth. it runs like a champ. The camera does what i need and i love that i can just shake it around and the camera comes on. The active notification has been a nice touch. I like how i can set it to turn off notifications while i sleep. The assist for meetings has been spot on. Using merge made changing from HTC to Motorola a breeze. LIke i said i am not some super user and i am sure i am missing tons of things that this phone can do, but i would not trade it for anything that is out there now. My battery like is great. i was always having to plug in my EVo. Get off the fence and just get the phone. You have 14 days anyways. I dont think in the end you will regret the decesion to get this phone. I know i have not and my wife wont set it down.

For anyone thinking I don't KNOW this phone, or that I don't UNDERSTAND the innovations that are packaged under the hood, please see the EPIC pre-release thread. I KNOW THE X. And I get what you're saying. But honestly ... in the end, it's still just a cell phone, and in a year or two no one will even remember it or how it changed (or didn't change) the world.

My argument is valid - $249 bucks for the 32GB Motomaker version of this phone is outrageous given the current cellphone market.

The HTC One is a fine phone, elegant, capable, in many ways innovative.

The LG G2 will be the foundation for the Nexus 5 it is not garbage. It's fast and has a very nice camera.

Though I prefer the X and it's style, size, build and functions ... it's not just simply a "BETTER PHONE". And it certainly does not separate itself from all other high end phones and deserve to be placed on a pedestal and worshiped. It also does not warrant throwing an extra $50 at it just to say I got the X phone.

But that's just my humble opinion. I don't wrong other people for spending what they are fine with spending but I am on a tighter budget than some and certainly don't just throw money around. That $50 means something to me. That $50 is $50 I wouldn't have for something else.

If im at a family event a lot of times I don't have a few seconds to wait for a camera to get into focus, it needs to fire up auto focus quickly (in good light, low light is understandably slower) and be ready to take a pic.

See that kind of picture quality would annoy me. the flowers are blurry and poorly focused, the insect to the right has very little detail as a result and the colors look a bit washed out overall.

Now compare that to something like this from the G2

http://i-cdn.phonearena.com/images/reviews/138650-image/013-A-LG-G2-Close-ups.jpg

and you really see how far ahead other high end phone cams are. the preservation of detail is just so much better, the colors are crisp and reasonably acurate. Even beyond the optimal focus point you still have decent details. Its not perfect but its pretty decent.

The FCC tear down on the N5 seems to point twords the same OIS camera used in the G2. Guess we wont really know if thats the final cam till its release though :eek:

I never said the camera is on the same level as other smartphones. I just said the phone takes decent pictures, and its not as bad as people make it out to be. Or the perception people have. Everything around the flowers is blurry because I focused on the flowers on purpose.

A picture with lower light. I will say these photos look GREAT viewing them on the phone.

This is why I love this forum. You guys (and or gals?!?) are awesome. Thanks for posting those pics. I went yesterday and shot some pics with the demo phones at the AT&T corporate store by where I work. Inside, in retail lighting (it was very cloudy and rainy in KC yesterday) and honestly, both phones took serviceable pictures. Now in the end I KNOW the LG camera is better (I have seen LOTS of pics taken with both phones online) and I KNOW the LG is faster (processor) has 32GB of storage blah blah blah. But I am, as previously stated, a Motorola fan boy and I do LOVE the X phone's form - function - size - style and in the end, I will in all likelihood be getting the X. That said because of it's stupid $50 price difference I am going to hold off for a few more ... days, weeks, month I don't know ... to see if it comes down or something else is announced (nexus 5) that I'd prefer to spend my money on. :motz::motz:

SO Moto has ... in the end really let me down here by pricing this phone out of the range I feel is realistic. (Again JMHO)

If pictures are important to you, I would NOT get the Moto X. I'm sorry, but those pics are TERRIBLE. Compare them to anything else out there and the difference is stunning. Maybe a firmware update will help, but as of right now the Moto X camera is incredibly poor. It does have some other compelling features that make it drool-worthy. But until they fix the camera, photos are not one of those features.
