Help Wireless Storage

So the G2 has Wireless storage ability. The phone connects to the wifi network without any issue, but it doesn't seem to be recognized as a device in my windows network map, so I can't use this ability apparently (won't connect with "\\ipaddress" in my browser). My desktop and laptop and printer show up, phone won't. Anyone had this issue with this phone or any others? All the other threads I've read say how easy the wireless storage connection is to set up and use, and I flat out can't get my home network to recognize the phone.

I've updated router firmware, reset router, turned off all firewalls, etc. Other devices never have a problem showing up or sharing files. Am I missing a setting on my phone to make it recognizable? I'm actually less annoyed that I have to continue to use a cord than I am about not being able to get this to work.

Airdroid seems to work....so with an external app I can go wireless. Still not what I want though!

In GENERAL, laptops and desktops are connected to your Network, but phones and tablets connect to your wireless router for internet connectivity, not for network connectivity. That is, when connecting your phone/tablet at home, you are entering the password for the router and nowhere does one specify the network or workgroup or homegroup.

That said, there are a few apps out there that can allow you to transfer files from your home PC/laptop to your wireless devices as long as both your phone/tablet and desktop/laptop are on the same network. Personally, I use one called "Wifi File Transfer Pro" on my phone and tablet. I then just use a browser on my PC/laptop to "see" the directory structure on my phone/tablet and copy files to and from them by typing in the ip address of my phone/tablet into the browser.

Hope this helps.

You must enable Wireless Storage from either the Settings or Quick Settings. Once activated, you will see the status along with a screen with the IP address, user, and password.

Add: apparently, I was/am wrong. The LG G2 can indeed connect natively to your Network, allowing drive mapping, etc., I just read this on another forum... sorry about that!

I don't have a G2 yet -- just hanging out to gather knowledge. :)

Yeah. I don't recall this feature demonstrated in any of the reviews, which is a shame. It is an added bonus to be sure. Transferring files is a snap, especially without having to plug in and wait for the device to load.

Thanks for the responses!

You must enable Wireless Storage from either the Settings or Quick Settings. Once activated, you will see the status along with a screen with the IP address, user, and password.

I did this.....enabled it on the phone and it tells me the ip and login info...the problem is that when I type the IP Address into the web browser, it times out and won't load. I also did that from the run program, just to see, and it does the same thing, and IE/FF/Chrome make no difference. It just won't connect.

When I was referring to my phone being connected to the network, I assumed as a storage device it would show up in Control Panel > Network > Devices like the wireless printer, laptop, desktop, etc. I guess I just assumed that since I couldn't get the wireless storage to work, even though the phone was using the wifi, it isn't being recognized by windows....where my potential problem is.

Anyone who is getting the native storage program to work....does your phone show up under your network devices? Or does it just connect instantly when you flip the "wireless storage" toggle and I've got the one phone that doesn't work?

Are you typing the two slashes before the IP? As stated before, this is not for web browsers, this is for file browsers.

Is your computer on the same network as your phone? Try this to find out:

Click Start and type "CMD" in the run/search box, hit enter.
Type "ipconfig" at the command prompt and hit enter.
Look for the entry for "IP Address" and see if it is the same IP shown on your phone except for the number after the last dot. They should be. If not then they are not on the same network.

You don't use the web browser for this; you need to use Windows Explorer. Put the IP address in the address bar/etc. If you're using Apple, use whatever they call it (that is equivalent to Windows Explorer).

Nice extra feature that I didn't know about. Works very easy/simple and no need to plug in via USB anymore.

I was using IE, not Windows Explorer....though I thought I read people using IE to access their phones....I'm fairly certain I accessed my laptop through IE, which was why I was trying to work it that way. So...helps to read!

Regardless, I have gotten it to work and that's why this community and you all rock. Thanks for the help!!

Secondary question...anyone know of a way to permanently mount the phone for quicker access? Or is running through the explorer the only way to do it?

Took me a quick minute to figure out it was in the search box (Windows 7) you had to type \\xxx.xxx.xxx (Ip address) and not the browser, since the phone tells you to do it in the browser. The browser would not connect kept getting unable to load error. But I don't think it takes that long to connect as I transferred 8gb of music to my phone and it took about 1/2 hr.

I was having the same problem, could not connect to the IP address, could not map the IP as a network drive - but I could ping it from a command window.

For me, (win 8), I right clicked file explorer, open new file explorer window, it came up in the libraries section, then typed in \\192.168.0.XXX and it came up with the vs980_4g_lte folder I could click on and explore. Hope this helps.

This function and the G2 is awesome.....

I'm confused. Are you using a router and harddrive to create a NAS, or do you just want to wirelessly move files between a PC and the phone over WIFI?

If the latter, install a FTP client like FileZilla on your PC. On your phone, download an FTP Server from the market. Gone from the market is SwiFTP which I prefer, but you can find it and "sideload" it.

That should provide you drag and drop capability from your PC without using a cable... If that's what you want to do.

If you want to address a harddrive attached to your router as a NAS from your phone... can't help you there. Would be cool to know how to do it. I would probably try using some File Explorer like ES File Explorer from the phone...

Ok, I was stumped like everyone else on how to access this feature. I was using the web browser like the phone says but you need to use file explorer. Open up my computer and in the box to the left of search (where you would enter a web address if it was a browser) just enter in the info the phone provides and you should be good to go. Speed is totally dependent on the speed of your wireless network. You can also gain access by typing in the info in the 'start search' box (on Vista just click start and at the bottom of the pop up box is the start search.) Hope this helps others, I was beginning to wonder if my computer needed to be wireless as well (I have it connected to my wireless router using a cable) but as long as your computer and phone are connected to the same router you should be good to go.
