Root Scottys noob friendly root guide-start to finish

I put a post on another thread last night by accident. So I'm doing this again on the correct thread.

I'm EXTREMELY new at this rooting process and I'm afraid I messed up something along the way. The whole process seemed to have worked just fine. After the ROM was installed from the sd card it tried booting back up but gets stuck on the white HTC startup screen.

I'm now trying to lock back my phone but my computer is not even finding my device.

Please help :'(

here are some basic troubleshooting tips to get your phone re-connected:
troubleshooting connectivity issues:
*make sure you have changed to your adb/fastboot directory!
-try a reboot of the PC
-try different usb cables and ports
-dont use a usb hub
-dont use usb 3.0
-make sure nothing capable of comunicating with the phone is enabled and running. htc sync, pdanet, easy tether, and even itunes have all been known to cause issues.
-windows 8 has been known to have issues. try a windows 7 or older machine

failing the above,
-i use these drivers for fastboot and adb(donwload and run as admin): http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe (mirror)

failing that, try manually updating the drivers in the following manner:
-put the phone in fastboot mode(select fastboot from the hboot menu)
-open device manager on the PC
-plug in phone, watch for it to pop up in device manager.
-update drivers with device manager, pointing the wizard to the extracted
driver download folder from above

note that you can check the connectivity of the phone, and make sure drivers are working by in the following manner:
-open cmd window. change to directory containing adb/fastboot utilities

-adb with the phone in the booted OS,usb debug enabled, enter:
adb devices in a cmd window

-fastboot with phone in fastboot(not hboot!),enter:
fastboot devices in cmd window

in either case,a properly connected phone with working drivers installed should report back the phones serial number.

however, there is not much you can gain by relocking the bootloader. you are on the newest hboot, wich indicates your on firmware that there is no ruu for. you will need to get back to stock by flashing a stock rom in recovery.

at that point, you can reinstall the stock firmware and recovery so you can safely relock the bootloader.

as i explained in your other thread, you prolly just have an incompatible boot image,so using the directions in the thread i linked you will let you get a rom installed, working, and booting.

just holler if you have questions about that process.

Ok, so I need to get the phone back to stock as I am selling it, but problem is, I cant get the computer to recognize the phone, as when when i type in ADB devices, nothing is found. I have the most recent RUU, but still wont recognize the phone. Any ideas?

Hi - I'm just trying to root my Rezound and I am having issues matching the md5sums for the recovery image...

for v3.16 I keep getting: b284a97df486abaf71665ef608b79935 from two separate attempts to download the file.
(ba69c118eb30ddf05e4743541bec0189 listed in xda)

for v3.15 I get: 9d127cde10b68de5e424aaea2d4a4357
(b0f721584e2d42aff37df1ebac9439fd listed in xda)

v3.14 matches what is listed in the xda forums. I searched the XDA post and it seemed like someone else had problems with v3.16, but they appeared to match what is listed now. I assume I should probably just use the v3.14 but thought I would check here to see if anyone had any thoughts. If you do, I would appreciate it.

Unlocking the bootloader went smoothly, thank you for the post!!

Just for the record, I figured out what the problem was. I was running the MD5sums for the .img file, not the .zip file. It was actually mentioned somewhere in this thread on page 6, but I must have missed it earlier.

V3.15 and V3.16 are like this since they are zipped in the download... although you will need to unzip the file to boot to the recovery image. It's a little confusing that it was done that way, but the MD5sums I listed above should be the correct ones for the unzipped .img files. Hopefully this helps out others if they encounter the same issue.

I am s-off, hboot 2.28, Build 4.03.605.2, and running Neo Simplistic rom.

How to get back to stock??? I tried to relock for hours b/c I read multiple times that relocking was necessary to RUU back to stock. I have also read multiple forums but am still confused.

I have my original "nandroid" backup but can not restore it since I am currently using CWM touch (latest) recovery. Can I just go back to Amon Ra and then restore my original nandroid?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

I'm heading to bed and don't have any rezound specific experience but as far as running an RUU, Relocking the bootloader is unnecessary because you are S-Off.

Restoring your backup should be fine. You should be able to change your recovery back. Just make sure to wipe system data and cache before restoring your backup. Treat it like you're flashing a new rom.

Edit: just to be clear. Change recovery, wipe, restore backup.

You should be okay either way, restoring a backup or running an RUU.

3)flash superuser root files*
there is not much to explain with this one. if booted to recovery from above, use the recovery menu on your phone to:
-make a backup of your stock, unrooted rom. completely optional, but a very good idea,IMO.
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik cache
-install zip from sd card(chose your superuser file)
-reboot

*congratulations,youre rooted :D
*note that you do not neccessarily need to flash superuser. if you want to flash a custom rom,you can go ahead and do that now,no need to root your stock rom first.

Looks like you didn't explain enough... How exactly do I use the superuser.zip file in my external disk to root my phone? How do I install zip from SD card? How do I boot to recovery (I though it was just the fastboot menu, but there is no option to make a backup)?

From the bootloader screen use the volume keys to navigate to recovery and use the power button to select recovery.

For the super user zip, place the entire zip folder on your sd card and once in recovery, there will be an option to install from sd card. Then you just navigate to the location of the zip file.

If your recovery is not a touch interface, you will use volume buttons to navigate and the power button to make a selection just like on the bootloader screen.

I used this guide to root my HTC Inspire 4g AT&T phone running v2.3.5.

Soooo, I followed this guide very thoroughly, and then I messed up. I accidentally loaded ext4 again and then installed the new rom from the Zip installer. Now, I am stuck with a phone that can turn on with the HTC logo, and sit there. I have held the down volume rocker and power button and it does take me to the bootloader. However, when I go to the "recovery" option, it shows a picture of a phone with a red triangle/Exclamation point combo. I cannot get it to show up when I use the "adb devices" command in cmd. I made a backup as recommended if that would help me in any way. I just need some kind of help.

That sounds like it might be the stock recovery.

So it's possible that you overwrote the custom recovery with the stock recovery but more likely that you only temp flashed the recovery. This would mean it only loads the one time and once the phone reboots recovery is still stock.

The choice is yours. I assume you still have your recovery.img available?

Follow step two again on the guide. You can either permanently install recovery or boot it one time. Once you get into recovery you can install you can install a ROM or restore a backup.

EDIT: Thanks! I got 4ext to boot up, however the vigor recovery didn't seem to work at all, whether it was perm or temp. I am curious if this will effect anything
thats becasue of this:

I used this guide to root my HTC Inspire 4g AT&T phone running v2.3.5.

youll need to use a 4ext compatible with your inspire 4g ;)

you can use the recovery image inside this zip: Simple File Sharing and Storage.

you might want to permantly install it,as for some reason fastboot booting recovery on the inspire/dhd does not work the same as it does on other phones, and it still is not able to install boot image. i believe ext 4 does have special settings that will allow the boot image to be installed, but i think brian will have a bit more info on that :)

Well, the only way I know how to make it permanent (short of flashing an image that already has it enabled, is to use the free 4ext recovery updater app and set up recovery through that. You can enable smart flash via recovery (in the advanced menu I think) but if I recall, it's only a one time thing.

Mind you it's been quite some time since I've used the app so I'm going off memory here...
Grant the app super user permission, then go to the online|install menu. It should detect your device automatically and at some point will ask you if you are s-on. Say yes when it asks. That will enable the smart flash feature. Choose the latest stable release and the app should flash the recovery image for you. Once done, you should be set up with smart flash enabled.
