Everything out of Lowell McAdam's mouth annoys me to no end, he's got such a pious attitude. This new statement doesn't bode well for the now nearer future of unlimited though.
Figures, I just paid full retail for a new phone. UGH.

As did I. I figure if they ever yank my unlimited, I have 2 lines that are month-to-month and upgrade eligible. Depending where I am in the timeline with my current phone, I'll either sell it and upgrade or get the latest and greatest to flip on eBay.

He's right. Unlimited is unsustainable. The problem is $30 per GB is highway robbery. Charge a reasonable fee for data and people would complain a lot less.

If I loose my unlimited on Verizon one of two things will happen.

1) most area I frequent are fairly densely populated and yet my coverage sucks. The best speeds if seen in my area is 3Gbit. I will leave Verizon for a carrier that can give me 3Gb in my home (I only get service in the SE room of my house right now) and I will likely same some cash in the process. The downside is that o may not have coverage in rural areas

2) I will revert to a dumb phone on the cheapest pay as you go plan. If I can't use data at a reasonable price then why the heck would I pay for it?

The only way data is $30 per GB is on the 2GB plan. If you're worried about losing unlimited, you are clearly using much more than 2GB. As you move up, the price per GB comes way down, all the way to $10 per GB at 10GB. So not quite as dramatic as you laid it out.

Not necessarily. I average about 2.5 GB/mo and still have unlimited at $30/mo. I would either have to get the 2GB plan and watch my usage for twice what I'm paying now, or jump to the next data package and pay twice +10 of what I'm paying now...

Doesn't sound like a very good trade off to me...

Let's also remember that unlimited talk and text is now included. Not sure how much you call, and if you currently pay for a text plan, but that's something....

And again, I am not defending the cost of data. My only point was that it isn't as simple as "$30 per GB".

I have unlimited data (yes I pay the $30 a month tethering fee) and go through 50GB a month with Netflix, Google play, and tethering my computer. I live in a place where no cable is available and DSL is very slow. If I lose unlimited data, I'm done with Verizon.

$10 per GB is not as dramatic? What do you pay for your land line? $80 for half a TB? Granted I don't expect mobile device to see the same pricing as land line but what good is smart phone without data? I would bet $1per GB would be easily doable.

Same here 3mbit LTE is better then 1.2dsl but only as long as your not paying $10 per GB. 1.2 is just fine at that price.

How did I end up being deemed the defender of Verizon's data cost? All I did was say it wasn't strictly $30 per GB. Again, I agree that it's way over priced.

I don't use nearly as much data as you do, but I'm with you. When my wife and I lose our unlimited data, we're jumping ship to another carrier. Verizon's going to lose two customers that they've had for over a decade. And they couldn't care less.

There may not be another carrier to jump to. I don't see there being many carriers offering unlimited for very long.

Well, because you're trying to compare apples to oranges... Unlimited costs most of us $30/mo and some lucky ones $10/mo. Tiered data starts at $60/mo for 2GB, and yes it gets cheaper per GB the more you buy, but it is still way more than $30/mo for unlimited. You can't just say, well if you have the 10GB plan it's only $10/GB. It is still and extra $40/mo MORE than what I'm paying now for unlimited...

Your argument that talk/text is less on tiered is moot. I pay short of $80/mo for my plan w/ discounts as long as I talk less than 450 minutes/mo (unlimited texts) which is not an issue for me. Yes, I could be paying the same for a tiered plan w/ 2GB, but I use a little more than 2GB so it would cost me more for the 4GB plan.

Our apples to apples price point comparison is with the plan that would match what we are paying total per month now, which is the 2GB plan. In that plan you pay $60 for 2GB of data, hence the $30/GB comparison. Any plan with more data is more expensive, period. Doesn't matter what the $$/GB is...

It's the way you said it, I guess... Your first statement made it sound like all of us clinging to our unlimited plans are "clearly" data hogs and should be happy that higher data packages are cheaper than $30/GB. ANYTHING more than $30/mo for data is too expensive for us...

Regardless Verizon's data prices are absurd (other carriers too but for sake of keeping it simple let's stick with Verizon)

I rarely, if ever, go over 2GB and I want my unlimited. I am paying for it, and I don't want to end up paying the same/more for less than I'm getting now. Plus, as technology advances we will likely be using more and more data regularly.

I use around 1.5-2GB on average. Probably wouldn't kill me if I didn't have unlimited, but I was in a bind on vacation a couple months ago without wifi and ended up using the hot spot feature. I exceeded 5GB. Regardless, I have the $10 unlimited deal so if I changed to 2GB it would actually cost me more. Pay more for less? Thank you, but no.
