Leaving the iPhone 4s behind, which Android?

Hello all,

Long time reader, new poster here.
I currently use an iPhone 4s as my daily driver and I want to go back to Android when my contract expires at the end of this month.

I should state I am not new to Android, I had an HTC Desire for 2 years and left Android because I felt iOS was that little bit better at the time.

I still like iOS, I like iOS and Android, but I am looking for a bigger phone with more storage space than my 16GB phone currently provides.

The question is, what do I choose?
My shortlist and pro's and cons is as follows:

Note 3
Pros - Massive screen, can run multiple apps at one time, i.e. web browser and calculator, something I would like to be able to do. Expandable storage and one of the newest phones on the market.

Cons - Is it too big? Build Quality? UI maybe not the best?

HTC One
Pros - Excellent build quality, fantastic display and speakers. Zoe camera option, 5 inch screen.

Cons - HTC are slow to push updates, No expandable storage (still more than my iPhone) Mixed camera reviews

Unless the KitKat announcement adds some features that HTC and Samsung add to their UI's, I probably wont look at a Nexus 5 as I am not really a fan of stock Android (apologies to anyone offended!).

Really interested to hear from people who have used both devices or owned both before or from anyone who picked one over the other, what was it that made you pick either phone?

Should also declare that the camera is not a deal breaker for me, both these cameras will take good photos I could view on a laptop.
Thanks

HTC One, Galaxy S4, Note 3, Nexus 5, Xperia Z, LG G2.

you literally cannot make a bad choice among that list. the only difference is in the UI and the form factor - go to the store and play with each one you think you may like. then make the call. you won't be disappointed.

HTC haven't done too bad with updates to the One so far. Released with 4.1.2, had already 4.2.2, and 4.3 is rolling out in several places now.

Personally I use custom ROMs, so have more options, and of course don't know how long it will keep up (though they have updated last year's flagships to 4.2.2), but I'd say they're doing better than a couple of years back.

Of course if you put a carrier into the equation then you can always get delays there too, whatever the phone.

When I had my desire it was slow, sooooo slow to get OTA's so I started rooting and using custom Roms as well, but I don't really have the time for that now with the old work/family balance!

What do you think of your HTC One Hadron, would you swap it for a newly released model or is it ticking all the boxes for you still?

I'm enough of a tech nut that I'd like a snap 800 system, but it's not in any way necessary. But I don't want anything bigger than the One (I found the S4 too large personally), so wouldn't swap for a Z1 or G2, and wouldn't even think of a Note 3 for a second. Don't know enough about the N5 yet.

But the One is anyway doing fine, and will be for a couple more years. I'm interested in what the N5 brings, but have no real interest in swapping.

I have a Nexus so I'm first in line for o/s updates but I really have to question how big of a deal that is these days: Google has moved away from wrapping up the latest goodies in the Android releases and instead puts everything but the under-the-hood stuff into the apps.

Since the apps are updated via Play there's no more hanging around waiting for manufacturers and networks to do their bit to releases in order to get any flashy new stuff.

Seems like a good approach to me and certainly, the recent Android releases have had little in them that's actually noticable let alone exciting

Note 3 isn't even released yet anywhere. It's scheduled for Oct 4. So no one really has used it yet I'd think apart from the lucky reviewers.

Quite a few people have the Euro models already, but the 4th does seem to be the data for many US carriers.

But as for the OP, it is a shame you don't like stock android but the beauty is that you have choices. Have you also considered looking at the Sony Xperia Z1?
