Thought Chromecast and the Note 3 would be awesome together.

So I thought the Chromecast would make an awesome accessory for the Note 3. Boy was I wrong! I am still waiting on the phone to get here tomorrow, but I got the Chromecast with an accessories order. This thing doesn't do anything. What a waste of money. Any reason I should keep it?

You need either Google Chrome on a PC/Mac or your Android device for it to function. Youtube some videos...you will see how it works.

I expected to be able o mirror my phones screen and stream local video files at a minimum. I have 6 other devices that can stream Netflix and YouTube.

If you havent already, you may want to check out http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/devices/chromecast/ To see what its intended purpose is. Its not supposed to mirror your phone.

Sounds like you didn't do any research on what it actually does and what the current capabilities are.

If you wanted a complete wireless mirror for your Note 3, the All Share Media cast is the way you want to go. I use it quite often and works great.

The benefit to Chromecast is actually in its ability to upconvert quickly/seamlessly. I've used it plenty of times and it's still amazing to me how much better the wireless upconvert is on the Chromecast, compared to other products I've tried before.

Has anyone used their note with chromecast yet?

I have chromecast but didnt get my note yet (verizion) and my current phone is like a 4 year old original droid so its not even capable of netflix

Im curious if the quality using chromecast via note is the same as streaming from an xbox 360/ps3 onto your tv for netflix and whatever other supported apps

(also I have no idea how the OP can complain about chromecast. I think it was like 29.99 and came with 3 months of netflix, bringing it to a netcost of like 5$)

You guys are right I didn't do the research I normally do because the cost was so low. I already have Netflix and I think the promo has ended so that doesn't help in the cost area. I guess I just assumed it would be able to do the same things as an Apple TV. My bad. I am still going to keep it and hope for more functionality in the future. That being said I won't be recommending it o anyone.

The core of Chromecast is its own Chrome browser.

When you cast from an Android device using one of the supported apps, it gets content at the highest resolution - it's not a mirror.

You can cast Netflix and then go off and do something else while it's playing. In fact, you can kill Netflix, reboot your phone and it will still keep playing.

That's the difference between Chromecast and Miracast (aka All Share as Samsung calls it).

I've found that the picture quality with Netflix exceeds that of the Netflix app built in to a Samsung SmartTV.

They already said they would be continuously patching it adding new functionality plus tons of new apps

Its taking longer than it should but so what

30$ < 100$

Ah thats awesome, ive been using it on my laptop which would always have netflix open in a window on chrome so i just assumed if i closed it out it would turn off

That makes it that much more convenient.

One question that ive been dying to know (probably would be better asking this in the chromecast forums i think)

but if I go on vacation where I dont have wifi or any internet outside of my phone, can I turn my note 3 into a mobile hotspot then connect with my chromecast and then stream netflix that way?

ive always wondered that

Laptop tab casting from Chrome isn't as good, they're working on it.

Working under a hotspot?

Possibly. It probably really comes down to DNS working as Chromecast requires and the hotspot supporting UPnP.

Not being positive or negative, just not sure on that last part.

I'll look for a way and if I find one, I'll add it to our Chromecast setup thread - or you may, I've left that one open.

Edit - quick Google search shows some people have gotten it working but it is a little tricky.

I have a PS3 that can play youtube but I prefer the Chromecast. CC is probably not as good as a Sharp smart-tv that uses wifi but it's just fine. I'd rather search for videos on my phone and play them on my TV....than to try and use the TV or ps3 remote to search. Just easier.

I'm very happy with my Chromecast and I look forward to using it with my Note3 when it arrives later today.

One word=patience. Google already mentioned they'd eventually bring in capabilities to cast local files. When that happens, nobody really knows, but I think it's worth the wait.

And yet again the UK has the pleasure of paying an enormously inflated price for a tech device. You pay 30 bucks, the price here is going to be 60 ukp!
