At this point? Frankly, I'm not sure Kyocera and/or VM cares. 
I admire the devs that are still trying to crack this phone to its knees, but that's barely moved as it is. None of them have successfully even made a custom recovery for it, which would be a big deal if there was one by now. Achieving that would at least allow devs to test different custom ROMS. But unlocking the bootloader comes first.
I'll enjoy my Event (similar to Rise minus QWERTY) until I get sick of it, or can set aside money for a new phone. At least I have my 2 year old LG Optimus V handy if that one breaks.

I was happy to sign this petition! I don't like the locked boot loader issue myself. This thing is the CHEAPEST phone on the market! Why are they scared? I always root my phones so I can uninstall any apps I don't use. That "debloating" makes room for stuff I need or want! Some phones are improved by custom ROMs as a custom ROM dev has time to spend perfecting everything. They aren't rushed by corporate deadlines. I owned a Motorola Triumph once. Great hardware, but the GPS library was so poorly written that it literally didn't work, when new! A very good series of devs fixed the issues. That phone was better hacked, than new! Are they worried that an "after market" dev will do a better job than they did? Answer...probably!

Still have my motorola triumph with custom rom installed. worked a lot faster now than when new. Camera was buggy though with CM9.
