How do I clear up disappearing internal memory ?

Good Morning DonB......... Thanks for the suggestion and I have posted this question over there to no avail. I guess the rooted folks either don't suffer with this or have no answer. At any rate I'm going to play with "task killers" and see what that does. I have looked in the market for "memory managers" and that seems to be what comes up. So I'm going to give it a go when I get a chance..........

Thanks again for your suggestions and help.......

Lisa ;)

You will need to install a custom ROM with A2SD+ (not FROYO's apps2SD, nor A2SD) . Observe the + in version.

Many of the popular ROMS offer A2SD+ which will require you to partition you SD with ext3(linux) with clockworkmod
I am currently using LeeDroid's Gingerbread ROM with HTC sense and A2SD+

This can resolve your long term memory issues

I am on my 2nd time of having low internal memory. Exact same problems as mslisaj above. The first time happened a few months ago and did everything I could think of. I cleared cache, cookies etc. Moved apps to sd card. no luck. Took phone to sprint store and they reset to factory settings. Had to reinstall all 3rd party apps again. Now just happened last night. What?? So I too saw that email was taking up most internal memory. So I opened email app. Then opened "folders". Then went to "trash". All of email I thought was deleted was now in trash (about 1500 emails). Had to delete all these messages again from the "trash" folder. Did that with my other 2 email accounts and recovered over half of internal memory. Saved me a trip to Sprint store. No factory restore again. No more f-bombs. I have to do this with my ipod touch too but it easier. Ipod touch has a "delete all" button. So it's just one step, go figure.

I clear our my deleted emails from that folder every once in a while too. By the way, there is a way to delete them all at once and I will explain it below. :)

Once you are in the trash folder, you just need to press the Menu button and choose Delete and you see a check marks on the side of each email. Press the Menu button again, and you can choose to select them all and delete in one fell swoop. ;)

I've been getting a low memory message too. And this hasn't been the first time. I usually end up deleting some application. But this makes me mad, because I know people who have a lot more apps that I do and they don't get these messages. I just went and cleared out the deleted mail from 1 of my e-mail accounts (88 messages in trash) and it got rid of my low memory message.

Thank you all for that suggestion!

Well, newer handsets have quite a lot more internal storage space than the venerable Sprint HTC Hero does. With a stock ROM running Android 2.1 with HTC Sense, you are probably looking at around 120 MB to 130 MB of free internal storage for your apps and so forth.

In contrast, my Sprint HTC EVO 3D has well over 1.2 GB of internal storage on its stock ROM. Another thing to think about is moving apps to the microSD card if you happen to be rooted and running an Android 2.2+ ROM. That will greatly increase your ability to store more apps. I hope this information helps you out.

Well Gentlemen, I have resurrected this old thread as I got my first low memory warning this morning since I installed the ROM I'm running about a year and a half ago. I started this thread back in February as I was aware again that my memory was disappearing and my HTC Mail App was growing. So today I installed K9Mail and dumped Data and Cache from the HTC Mail. I instantly got 30 MB's of memory back and my phone is snappy again. I always suspected this was my problem and this was, according to TT Back Up the biggest memory user on the system. Now that I have K9 I have notice that it handles mail a lot differently then the HTC Mail. It handles everything from the server instead of putting it all on the phone. Besides I absolutely love the K9 system. So for those that may read this that have rooted phones. Use Titanium to do a force close on the HTC Mail App. Dump all the Data and Cache and install K9 and breath new life into your phone. I should have done this two years ago.

Thanks again to you men that have really been there for me and help me sort this phone out. I know you're shaking your head's on how timid I am to do anything to it but when I have moved forward you have always been right. So I thank you for that.

Sincerely,

Lisa :wavey:

What exactly did that clear out?? My old HERO is slowing down badly in it's old age I'm sure it's an internal memory issue. But I would hate to dump contacts, pictures or what ever else that might be important. Maybe I should Nandroid back up the phone and then try it. I'm assuming I could go back then if I didn't like the results.

Let me know if you can what you cleared out and give more detail on what exactly that did. I would love to try it without a lot of risk.
