Help "Convert" phone contacts to Google contacts?

I resolved this problem by exporting my phone contacts (not google contacts) to the SD Card. I then re-imported them to my Google Contacts ... after choosing the import "one vCard" option. With this, you'd expect your contacts to be duplicated. Luckily, you can tell your phone to just show your google contacts. To do this, just go to "People">"View" (press the menu button to access more options) then untick the checkbox that says you should show contacts from "phone" and bingo, you are good to go!

Just did this and still no sync to gmail. Was searching around for quite a while and found out that the sync seems to fail when you have low internal memory - which I did. So I deleted a few big apps (like flash) temporarily, and went back to the sync menu and it started working again!
Now I have an online backup of my contacts too which is great in case I ever lose my phone.

If you have a Galaxy S3, go to contacts, click the menu button and select "Merge with Google" easy peezy!

The way it should be!

I know this is an old thread, but wow - I have an Samsung Galaxy s3 and was thinking I would have to merge them all by hand to get rid of the "phone" contacts - but you're right, just one menu item, and they're all converted - thanks!

It leave me with a slightly annoying set of duplicate (but joined, so you only actually see one contact in the list) google contacts, but it's not a big deal, and splitting them and deleting them would be way less work than copying all the info over like I thought I was going to have to before.

Thanks again!

I know this is an old thread, but just thought I'd mention that I gave my wife my Rezound and had to convert all of her contacts to Google.
I accomplished this fairly easily by opening Contacts/Menu/Move contacts. It brought up a window to choose between Google and phone contacts. I chose phone and next. The next window gave me the option to move the contacts to Google. Took about 30 seconds. Then I went to settings/Acounts & sync/Google and synced the contacts. Now they all show up online at my Gmail account.
