My thoughts on the Gear

I remember once reading that at BestBuy the return-percentage of the Gear was a little over 30%

Reason for return: I eventually couldn't cope with any more mocking.

I use handcent also. I have stock to receive notifications but with sound at silent. I do have the two notifications but I can use my handcent which I like very much but also get the full text on the gear. Perfect? No but it works to get both of what I want.

Exactly how are you getting notifications on your Gear and running Handcent? I have tried and any time I have Handcent installed I can no longer get my text messages on my Gear...i.e. the text from the messages do not display. I have tried various settings and still no luck.

I have been using the stock sms app and I will have to give it one plus. While you have the stock sms app open press the volume + / - buttons and it zooms in or out. I love this feature. When I am wearing my contacts I can actually see my text messages on my phone without having to grab a pair of reading glasses! Old age is no fun...lol!

Handcent is disabled pop ups still happen. Like I said though you still get the notification that you have a message from the stock but I have that sound to silent. It's not the best but I can still get text messages on the gear and use handcent from the phone. Hope this helps

Ahhh, OK! A picture is worth a thousand words...lol!

I will try that and see if I can get it to work on mine as well. I really miss Handcent (but not so much after the last update. the dang thing looks like IOS junk), but want to continue getting my sms on my Gear.

That sucks. Hopefully that fix that soon. I will wait a couple months and then decide between the Gear, Sony SW2, and HotWatch.

I never update handcent until at least a week or more and I read at least 20 reviews. I guess I won't do this update at all there have been a lot of negative reviews on the latest update. Good luck with the gear I love it. I also use out of milk for my shopping list but to keep using the phone and trying to shop with a basket is hard I just text the list to myself and use the gear for reference to my list love it.

Yeah, this is one point where I wished I was rooted and had all my Titanium Backups from my Nexus and would install the old version of Handcent. I am not fond of the new one at all.

And are you using Handcent popups? That is one feature I love about Handcent, is getting the text messages on my lockscreen and being able to reply back without having to unlock my phone. If you use Handcent popup do you still get your text messages on your Gear? Also, you are leaving "auto retrieve" turned on in the stock app...correct?

Yes to all question handcent is disabled but popup enabled and yes to auto retrieve. The pop up is what I like but I also really like the different signature for different contracts and different ringtones.

Thanks for the help! Got it working. a bit annoying having to receive two notifications like that...but only way so far to get it to work. Surely, something will get fixed somewhere to allow the third party apps to push stuff to the Gear.

How is the delay for screen turn on when you want to just check the time?
How well does S-voice work for replying to a text message? I'm assuming if there is a mistake, you have to start over?
I have pre-ordered a HotWatch, but will buy and try the Gear once the Christmas shopping season with longer return policies start. Gear looks great, and has a larger color screen. But the screen turns off and will be harder to see in sunlight, and will be too bright in low light conditions if you have it set for outdoor viewing. HotWatch has a screen that always stays on (at least I think so), will be very easy to see in the sunlight, won't be too bright in the dark, will have small keyboard to reply to text messages, has directional speaker for more private calls, is half the price, but doesn't look as good, and screen is not color. Decisions, decisions....

HOT :: Pre Order

I have the sony smartwatch 2. 100 dollars less. Charges with micro usb and battery lasts 3 days. Looks pretty good...although I llike the look of the Gear better. Screen isn't as high res..but that doesn't matter. I don't love all the notifications but with Augmented Smartwatch app, I can modify vibrations and other stuff. It does not have a mic so you can't speak to it... and no camera... I'm ok with that. I really just need the notifications and it does great with those. You have to push a button to wake it up (if there is no notification that just did it) I would have a look....

One thing I think some people doing reviews need to understand is that the Gear is not intended to replace the phone. It merely just piggy backs off of your phone.
I'm very pleased with my purchase. I don't think it's that big at all. Maybe it's because Im use to wearing my iPod nano watch or my big face G-shock. So for what this watch can do, I'm very please with the size, the features and the price. All those other watches we spend half the price of the Gear but they do HALF the things the Gear can do.
All I really wanted to get at is, if you are considering getting one.......get it and try it out. Don't go based off these reviews b/c half the time the people writing them or recording them don't know what they are talking about.
One of the things I would have liked on the watch but not a huge deal would have been the notification led. Other than that....I'm a proud owner of the GEAR.

I was one of those unhappy people who, in 1975, bought the Sinclair Black Watch (which promised so much but delivered so little) with my first weeks wages. I may pick up a Gear when the price comes right down but till then I will remain all jaundiced and skeptical.

I've still got mine. I keep it in the safe at my parents house. Great looking but a bit awkward to press the screen just to see what the time is. :)

do you ever find yourself making calls through it... or is that something that is a feature...but not really practical?

I'll take calls while @ work w/the GEAR,which is a practical solution for many workplace scenarios.

To actually make a call,no.
I'll excuse myself from an environment/situation/discussion as necessary & use my phone or B/T Headset for outgoing calls.

Does the gear have an option for a second hand? I am a nurse & use my watch to count pulse, respirations, etc. I would like to try it but must have a second hand

Yes it definitely does. Check out the Watch Styler app in the Gearmanager appstore for details. If the app isn't available in your region, go to the XDA thread here and download the apk Watch Styler - xda-developers

There's also some examples on page 2 of that link of watch faces that include a second hand.
