4.3 Issues of Interest (Verizon)

I had the security warning issues after the update. Every time I connected to a WiFi network or installed an app, I would get the warning. It was overly annoying. I also had another issue with an app, so I opted to do an FDR. I got no love from the FDR, same issues as before with an additional WiFi issue that was intolerable. Out of frustration, I decided to FDR one last time before going and yelling at the folks at the VZW Store. After the second FDR, I have no security warnings, no WiFi issues (other than the "Casual User WiFi" at work sucks, but I'm not complaining because they don't have to provide it) and the app that was giving me issues also works properly now.

As I have experienced in the past (more than once) the update is solid, but the update path is not. If you are having the security issue, I would do an FDR. It is not the desired solution, but since it fixes the issue it may be your only option.

From what I understand, KNOX is not installed during the upgrade and has nothing to do with the Security Warning. KNOX is a sandbox for the phone to help keep thing secure and can be installed if necessary. I have heard rumors that my company is toying with the idea of having persons with company issued cell phones use a KNOX instance to do company related work in. Luckily, I don't have to worry with that.

**EDIT

KNOX is the new bootloader system and contains the new security features for the phone, so it is the issuer of the Security Warnings, but the app provided actually installs the sandbox feature. My bad, I misread the article I was looking at and when I reread it realized my mistake. My apologies for the blurb above about KNOX.

Been a little frustrated after the 4.3 update. I opted to do a factory reset and reconfig my phone. I had heard this is the best way to go and had seen the benefit in the past. However, I'm having some issues I cannot figure out.

  1. The Email counter stopped working after the upgrade and even after the factory reset. I did notice when I first added the account it was keeping track but only emails I had received previously. New emails were no longer showing in the counter. I cleared the cache/data in the counter last night but no change. I noticed this a.m. the counter started working but then realized only because it's downloading old email. Have previously deleted and rebuilt the Comcast email account twice already (clearing data/cache in Email).
  2. When I had my S3 (running 4.1.2) I could dock it in my car windshield dock and Car Home Ultra (CHU) would automatically load. When undocked it would exit CHU automatically. Then when putting the S3 in the Samsung desktop dock on my nightstand at night it would go to the Home Desk screen and show the clock. Now on the S4 (starting with 4.2.2 and also 4.3) it will not make the switch. It wants to force one or the other only and I cannot do both automatically. So I find myself having to do the "this time only" every time I move it between the two docks.
  3. I touch the power key to turn the screen off and put the S4 in my holster. I take it out of my holster and often fine the screen on. I know I'm not hitting the power or home button and with the case/holster combo as it would be impossible to do.
So far this are things I discovered right away. One app no longer works because it's not compatible with 4.3 but hopefully that will get updated but it doesn't look like it (Bluetooth and Wifi Unlocker - allows you to connect to devices of choice and not have to enter your screen lock code).

Navigation is gone.

There is no longer a separate shortcut to start Navigation (although existing links on your home screen apparently will not be removed). The shortcut is now just called Maps. Before there never was a separate Navigation app, just a Navigation shortcut.

I presume that you never updated your prior Maps app to version 7. It generally sucks compared to the older version, and has quite the learning curve. But to get started, start Maps. Assuming you're looking at a map screen, there will be a search box at the top, and at the right of that there will be a curved arrow icon. Hit that and it will bring up the navigation functions.

There will be a lot to learn. One thing important is to get a wide area view that shows traffic, you need to hit the the bottom right of the screen (three bar icon) and hit route preview. (There's also a tap, hit, slide down short cut, but it's not easier than just going through the menu.) The route line will be blue rather than green, but if there is traffic it will show a different color.

Thank you!
I checked in maps and didnt notice that little icon. I wouldnt have found it. I seriously thought Nav was gone.
Oddly, the look of navigation is nothing new to me. Its looked like this for a while, however I did still have the blue navigation icon until this morning after I installed the 4.3 update.
I hope we get the shortcut back. If youre in a car, the less buttons you need to press the better.

I still have the icon on my home page, so it's odd yours was removed. I'm afraid to delete it because I might loose it forever since it no longer appears in all apps.

It does take me to the same place in Maps as if I'd hit the curved arrow icon, so it does serve some purpose.

I still had it after the update this morning, but I restarted my phone then since youre supposed to after an update and...gone.

And yeah. Having the old blue Nav icon saves you from an extra button press.

A few changes I have noticed with the 4.3 update on Verizon:
  • On the Google Now Card screen you can say "OK Google" to begin search
  • Noticed Facebook notification LED flashes green
  • When Locked, after swiping down from the top for notifications, app loads in background but I have to swipe to unlock before it shows
  • I also frequently receive the KNOX security violation message
  • When turning screen off to save battery during navigation, I no longer get the annoying "Do you really want to exit nav?" when I turn screen back on.
  • Under Settings > Application Manager the disabled apps category is now called "TURNED OFF"
  • There are 3 new apps for a radio service called ANT. Two can be disabled.
  • In the Play Store you now access "My Apps" (updates) from the left side of the screen instead of the bottom left "menu" button.

I for one do not like the fact that now anything in the notification bar can turn on the flashing blue led. For example every time I get a new notice that it's my turn in the one game I play the blue led flashes. Dunno if the latest system update caused that or the latest update to the game itself. Before the led would not flash then...which I prefer. I only want it to flash when something of importance is there..like missed txt/call or a voicemail. With as many games of Dice I have going this thing will be flashing all the time. Trying to figure a way around it but no luck yet.

It might help to go into manage applications and turn off notifications for specific apps.

I decided, after ALL my internal memory was gone so I could not get another app AND that by making Titanium Backups somehow I got my 32GB card filled also but could not see the 'hidden' files, to finally just take my rooted phone and set up an open ROM which was after much searching Hyperdrive. I could see that restrictions by Knox, loss of A2SD and other game-playing by Samsung and Verizon were going to have me returning a phone I really liked. After hours of talking to VZW who acknowledged they knew of the 'hidden' memory loss, their only "corporate" answer was to allow upgrade to new wares which would solve that problem. Of course, it eliminated further problems for carrier and manufacturer by taking the flex out of making the phone personal.
.
Many will just not like this solution and do similar to myself.
.
I am very happy with my now NEW flexible phone which has most of my apps back and I have over 8GB FREE on my device!
.
Highly recommend Hyperdrive, from install all the way through to operation.
.
My other experience with ROMs is CM9 on a TouchPad and this is much advanced and easier despite later CM9 custom 'gui' driven setups that are available on some newer custom ROMs such as Hyperdrive.
.
Progress progresses if you progress.....

There is also a problem with texting and trying to access a contact. For instance, When I type in Pam all of the names starting with A come up. Can't figure out what to do to fix this.

This !!!!!!!! I can't believe more people aren't complaining about this. It is driving me nuts. Have to go into contacts to send a text now. I can't stand it

Also more often then not when I unlock the screen my contact folder I made(with all separate contacts in a folder) is always popped up. I have to back out to get it off the screen.
