Why would you root Andriod TV?

There are various box options available some show as rooted, why would you need a rooted box though? Is this essential for running XBMC?

What benefits does it bring to an Android TV box?

Luckily android has a lot of VPN apps in the playstore but they need root access. So a rooted android device is essential in the UK! Yeh that's what I was talking about. A VPN app that you run on your phone, tablet or dongle, enables you to watch say US or UK tv outside those countries, bypass ISP or government censoring, give you a secure path when using insecure open WiFi etc. No root required. You either configure the VPN settings in Android or you install an app, that connects to a VPN service somewhere and you're good to go. I use a VPN myself because I'm in China. Can't get Facebook or Youtube here without a VPN, along with many other sites.
