I was asking the same thing when I first purchased my S4 so I called Samsung to ask them. Apparently the only way the stock Swype gets updated is when the phone gets software updates. I had Swype purchased from when I had my HTC phones. The stock version of Swype is definitely behind on the updates...the paid version in the Play Store is much better..plus it's updated more frequently. If u like Swype I suggest u buy it....it's not expensive at all.
