Help 4.3 problem

Just missed a call on mine, notification came on but phone didn't ring, lock screen now takes an age.!!! emailed samsung yesterday, not expecting much back from them...will keep you all posted.

I've just emailed them as well. Not expecting much either, but if they receive a lot, hopefully they'll take stock. I'm sure this story will pop up on in the media somewhere as well, CNET etc, and that should get their attention.

Thanks acidbob

Another issue:

Phone wouldn't wake up after numerous presses of the power and home buttons. Decided to call myself from another phone to see if that worked. The phone rang, but my S3 did not wake up from sleep. It didn't vibrate, or ring. No way of knowing a call was incoming at all. I had to pull the battery. There was no missed call showing, nothing. This is potentially a very dangerous issue.

i've started to have a few oddities in the lst 24 hours.

1) phone would not react from sleep mode when pressing the power button. Resulted in me having to hold the power switch in for the phone to reboot.

2) phone suddenly rebooted when connected to in-car charger. This has never happened before.

3) lock screen appears to try and find a face and then promptly shuts / powers off.

Reply from Samsung,

Thank you for contacting Samsung Customer Support.

I am very sorry to hear of the issues you are experiencing with your Galaxy S3 since the recent software update. I understand how frustrating this can be as you would expect an update to improve the use of the device.

Old systems settings can be left on the phone after an update occurs, which is why we usually recommend a full factory reset after updating. If this isn

Urm, I don't want to set a cat amongst the pigeons here, but after performing a factory reset (it is so much easier to restore everything after a FDR nowadays than it was a few years ago!), things are a LOT smoother!

Here's why I think they are:

Samsung stated in their reply above, and subsequently their reply to me (word for word as above), that "old systems settings can be left on the phone" and I think I know what they mean; can anyone find "Developer Options" on their 4.3 afflicted GS3? I can't, but I they were available on 4.1.2 because I had all the window animations etc switched off.

After updating to 4.3 initially, my brain noticed no difference at all to the window animations / slide into view stuff which means that they must still have still been switched off, because the second I performed the FDR and went into my apps, my brain noticed that they were back! I tried to find the developer options, but couldn't.

So, is it possible that these options, along with other changed or removed options, resident from the previous firmware have messed up other people's phones? Are Samsung actually talking sense...?

After my FDR and seeing the difference compared to pre-FDR, I'd strongly recommend anyone to do the same. Just don't expect to be able to switch the annoying window animations off (gonna take me a while to tolerate them!).

I tried to find the developer options, but couldn't.

Go to "About device" scroll down to "Build number", tap it 7 times, and "Developer options" will be enabled. Phil
All thanks go to funkylogik for this tip.

p.s. After doing this go to "Settings", "More", and you will find the "Developer Options" just above "About Device"

what do you lose doing an FDR?

Everything that is resident on the phone storage; pictures, music, etc (I attached my phone to a PC and copied EVERYTHING on the phone over to the PC).

All settings are lost, unless you back them up via your Google account, including homescreen settings. All your apps should start downloading automatically once the reset is done if you have this option checked.

All in-app settings will be lost, unless you have those backed up.

Ok, so my example of the dev options might have been off slightly , but the FDR HAS made a lot of difference, although waking the phone up still takes some time...

Too early to say.. I'm still putting my stuff back on it.

I'll edit this post when I know more.

Alan

Edits:

- Seeing some WiFi problems. The S3 reports an unstable WiFi connection. I'm 2m from the WAP and no other devices have an issue. Turning WiFi off/on resolves.

- Slow wake-ups still.

- On a positive note: I can now get some app widgets to work now that have not worked for a while.

- Overnight battery drain was reduced. There seems to be a strong correlation between battery drain and WiFi. I.e as soon as I'm roaming battery drain increases. Plus the new function of disconnecting from WiFi networks which may require a web interaction sucks, especially for O2.

- Just been out-and-about. The FDR'd phone will no longer connect to O2 WiFi. Disconnected because it requires sign-in, on connection takes you to the WiFi home page where you have already been granted access (for registered devices), meanwhile phone reports sign-in ongoing. This eventually times out and disconnects the phone from the network.

- I have a 3rd S3 which I updated on Monday. I've had this running with WiFi disabled when away from the office WiFi. Battery drain on this phone is normal.

Well I have two S3's on 4.3. I've done an FDR on one and left the other.

The FDR'd device is till showing slow wake-up. But sometimes this is slower than the other S3 and sometimes faster. Given the other issues noted it seems an FDR is neither a fix or an improvement.

It's improved the lag which I experienced with music playing and general slowdown, although the delay with waking up the device is worse than it ever was, and it was just about tolerable before the update.

I think it's clear that Samsung have messed up, regardless of how the device improves with their advice of performing FDR. It's already all over the Web, so they'll have to be paying attention.
