screen protector

I usually change mine when the "rubbings" on the plastic get annoying enough. So far I've changed my phones before I wanted to change the screen protectors. (But back when I had a pocket sized "computer" and I used Walmart plastic fabric as a screen protector, I changed it about every month. It was cheap, though. A square yard cost about $2.)

I don't use a screen protector...haven't on the last 4 or 5 phones I've had

So I don't change it very often

Has your screen scratched up?

I went naked with the GNex and all was fine. Did the same with the Nexus 4 and there were 3 or 4 quite significant scratches on the front. It was never dropped and always went solo in my pocket (except I expect for a few grains of sand).

I'll be using a screen protector on all new phones from now on, at least until a glass manufacturer releases an unscratchable screen.

Nope, I've never gotten any significant scratches on my screens. My reason for not using one has more to do with the feel of them rather than the scratch resistance of the glass. I've never been able to find one that felt like the the naked screen...there's always a different feel to them.

Of course because they are plastic and not glass. SPIGEN on Amazon has an expensive screen protector ($30) for a glass screen protector. Given it might not feel like the Nexus 5 screen but it will have the feel of A screen. But if you have no problems with scratches, more power to ya. I on the other hand am too paranoid. I've had gorilla glass phones before and it doesn't end pretty.
