The OTA is flashed in recovery and can be used on a totally stock device that still has its bootloader locked. The factory image is flashed through an unlocked bootloader. The OTA is the update that leaves your data intact while the factory by default wipes the device. However by altering the flash script or carefully manually flashing the right partitions, it can be used as an update.

Thanks, just had a play around with the new launcher and it's very nice for the most part. It's actually quite nice to have a launcher available directly from Google.
Only complaint is that the app draw animation doesn't seem very smooth, i'm used to Nova Launcher which still seems smother in the regard. I wish Google would fix that.
I'll be honest, this is the longest I have had to wait for an OTA on my N7's. IIRC I had the 4.3 update the night after it was unveiled on mine, and two days later on my sons.:dontknow:
I believe the factory images can be flashed onto a locked bootloader as well, since they're signed, no?
I wiped my N7 yesterday and loaded KitKat through the factory image (I have an unlocked bootloader so I can't definitively answer the question above, but I'm pretty certain). I have to say, I think removing the up/down arrows from the Wifi icon was a real step backwards, and I'm not sure I see the benefit.
It actually doesn't work? The app has to specifically call it out through a call introduced in 4.4, do you know of an app that's updated to do this and you tried it? That's a shame if so.
Also, my idle battery drain has been drastically reduced by this update. I mean, it has been cut by probably two thirds. Not sure what happened there, but I've got virtually all of my apps re-installed so it's not the lack of a battery-draining app. Last night's battery drain while I was sleeping was practically non-existent.

I'm not so sure they're signed anymore. You seem to get little warnings in the output now that boot, recovery, and system don't have a sig when flashing the rom as the zip file through the bootloader.
I agree that removing the arrows was a bad move and I also don't like how they don't have a second color to show that you're connected to the router but not the internet l like before unless you pull down quick settings to reveal orange colors on wifi.

I got some horrible wakelocks in the early days with my Nexus 5 due to app incompatibilities with the update. Greenify has helped quite a bit with that.
Has anyone here received the update? I am in NY and no sign up the update as of this morning. I have tried OTA but having problems with the SDK recognizing my N7 when in debugging mode.

You may be right; I remember seeing the missing sig errors when I flashed.

Yeah, I rather expected I'd get a downgrade in battery life until all apps were updated, so this drastic increase is quite nice.
The first flat area, I expected, because I didn't have much installed. Then you see the drop-off where I installed my other apps, set up sync accounts, etc. Then I went to bed, and it's practically flat:
So first off, sorry for plugging another site, but I decided I was sick of waiting for the KitKat OTA update and was going to try manually installing it. I am not savy enough to flash it from the files from Google and I don't know how to root a device, but I did fine some pretty simple step by step instructions that included all the software I'd need.
The one problem I did have through the whole process was my laptop, which runs Windows 7, recognizing my device when I was in boot mode. There are a few options in the article to deal with this problem, the last one about downloading PdaNet was the one that actually worked for me.
After that, install was easy and I came back to phandroid to download the GEL launcher and the update for Google Search. Now my Nexus 7 is running KitkAT, my buttons are transparent, Google Now works, and always listening mic for "Ok Google" is working.
This is so dumb. I keep checking for the OTA daily. The Moto X is getting 4.4 today thru Vzw. Doesn't that just seem wrong? 2013 Nexus device is getting beat out by a non Nexus device in receiving the new OS update. WTF?
