Root [ROM] Sleipnir v2.4.0.5 - 10/24/13 - VM & SPRINT

Firstly, I want to apologize for the delay in replies - I got hit with the flu a week and a half a ago pretty hard, and am finally on the mend after a complete purge (I didn't want to move for days). Now that I'm back.... time for replies!

@saidiadude: I want to personally thank you for all of that extremely useful data; it's fantastic! At this point, the GPS.conf file is identical to the one in the stock ROM with the exception of adding in A-GPS support. If I'm looking at the data you've presented correctly, then it can be stated safely that the following is true:
  1. Without A-GPS, lock-on times to stock are comparable/negligibly-virtually-identical. That makes sense given that the GPS.conf files are identical with the exception of added A-GPS support.
  2. With A-GPS, time-to-first-fix is slower than it is on stock. However, subsequent lock-ons are faster.
If indeed that is the case, then that is exactly as what should be expected. The very nature of A-GPS means that the first fix will take a little longer, with the point being that the signal strength, and subsequent lock-ons, be both stronger and faster. That's because A-GPS is, after all, Assisted GPS, and connects to (an) actual server(s) in addition to satellites. It would appear that everything is therefore working as it should. The only way to make anything faster at that point would be to speed up one's own data connection (3G is slow by nature), improve the hardware of the A-GPS servers, or improve the hardware of the phone itself, lol. :)

Artine it wont let me go to tagged.com it always says webpage not available wen it is i check it from my other phone and it comes up

Thanks for the bug report! I went ahead and double-checked this with my girlfriend's OE, and I could verify that access to tagged.com is blocked. This is because the website is blocked commonly by adblockers like AdAway for Android, and the adblocking feature of Pimp My ROM. Since Sleipnir uses a mega hosts file that combines both the Pimp My ROM adblocking with AdAway and a couple other sources too, I checked and found that tagged.com was one of the websites being blocked. I went ahead and corrected this, and will post a public v2.4.0.7 build with that correction as soon as possible. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. :)

I get those error too dont know why, but ones i run ad block n clear the browser like force stop it , i can go to sites i couldnt go before

Is this also for tagged.com? If you run a separate adblocker that overwrites the hosts file, it will undo all of the complete adblocking already provided for you and give you a much lower number of blocked websites. However, this means that all of the websites the adblocker doesn't have blacklisted therefore become accessible again, which explains the behavior you mentioned. Many adblocking services use a few servers and blacklists, and are typically different than other adblocking services use, to generate varying list. I went ahead and combined several lists found both online and those provided by some very popular adblockers, and threw them together under one roof already so that users do not have to install ad-blocking (it's already done for you). However, if there is a website that is blocked that shouldn't be, let me know!

Artine, I want to say "thank you" for your hard work and best wishes to you.

I seem can't dl the file. It kept saying missing "plug-in" and "video play". I did not have this problem with 2.4.0.3. Please advise.

Thanks,

KTH

Thank you for helping to make this ROM better, and your kind words. :)

No worries, just try the other one(s) on the SendSpace page to download the ROM - when you've got the right link, you'll be prompted to download the proper .zip file. Be careful to not download anything using their wizard, and un-check the button about downloading with their offers or whatever. Or, just use the DevHost link which provides you with much faster speeds anyway, and the download button is a medium-sized dark grey one :)

Thanks Artine for the comments. The GPS system is working well enough - it still hiccups once in a while and will take about 30 seconds to lock on (1 try in 10 or 15?). I am OK with this though. A quick question: Will the UI bug be fixed in this next version (The menu that pops up: 'Did you say'... is black text on grey. Also happens with text input: 'Did you mean'...).

Hope you're feeling better. There's a nasty throat virus making the rounds here as well :-(

Artine I love this rom. My only problem is my wife and I can't log into the game My Singing Monsters. I'm wondering if their servers are on one of the block lists as well.

It's possible. I ran a search through the hosts file to see if anything came up on My Singing Monsters, to no avail. Since their server(s) aren't listed anywhere I could find, or on a website, I couldn't ping anything to get an IP address to track down in the hosts file (there are both domains and IP addresses in the file). Because of this, and I'm anticipating that others are running into these types of issues (or may in the future), I'm going to revert the hosts file back to the stock one - no ad-blocking will be included, to prevent further issues (and past ones that were mentioned), and to allow users to gain ad-blocking of their choosing. :)

It takes a bit longer than the stock ROM, but it shouldn't take 3 minutes.

Hello again :)
Just posting to see if anyone can help me figure out how to shorten my really long boot times. It takes my device 3 minutes to fully boot. Is this normal?
Thank you.

Initial boot time will take a minute, perhaps two. This is because the dalvik-cache was wiped upon install, and the dalvik VM needs to rebuild the cache and re-optimize the apps. Subsequent boot times should be <15 seconds; I've experienced 5 seconds at the shortest.

However, boot times also depend on how much data you have stored on the phone - if you're getting a not-enough-space message because you're entire /data partition is nearly full, the phone will take a while to boot. That's because it has to load the data partition before you can access much of anything (like your app drawer), and the more space is filled the longer it takes the processor to load that partition.

If you've just wiped the dalvik-cache and have the internal /data partition nearly filled up, and you're rebooting the phone, may I recommend making some tea? Coffee, perhaps?

after a week trying the other ics roms, iam back on this one. Stability clinches it for me.
Two requests if possible.
I have been using septa instant app and the text there in the selector shows gray on black, making it hard to see. Has anyone else seen this on other apps?

Charging animation in the status bar battery. I miss this from the stock rom. The lock screen shows charging but the status bar battery does not.

these aren't initial boot times. this is after having this ROM on since 2405 release. i'm currently booting back up from a random reboot, it started at 1620, it's now 1622 and it's still on the Sleipnir logo... i've never ever seen anything like 15 seconds. reading that made my jaw drop, hah.

i do have quite a lot of data on my phone though. i don't get any of the capacity warnings, i have a very large external SD card installed on the phone, would it help to move all my apps to the external card instead? if so, how do i do that? lol

thank you for the help, and thanks again for putting so much effort into this ROM

I was also experiencing extremely long boot times after updating to v2.4.0.5 - typically over 3 minutes.

Tried removing unneeded data and even removed the SD card but nothing improved the boot times. Eventually realized that I originally had the de-odexed version installed and had updated with the odexed version without first formatting /data.

Sure enough, formatted /data and re-installed odexed v2.4.0.5 and boot times are back to normal and everything is working great.

Really like this ROM - thanks for all of your work Artine!

Ok I loaded Sleipner. And it looks great and is smooth which is great, but now it seems like it gets flustered with everything I have running and poof reboots. I have loaded no frills CPU and I am messing with the under and over clock. Any suggestions for most stable settings and governor?

Sleipnir imo has a ram management issue for some strange reason. The more apps you have in memory the more likely you are to get a reboot. Haven't found any settings that helped

Just loaded this to compare it with AOKP 4.2.2 - which was giving me a lot of problems. Some stuff "just works" here (Maps and Bluetooth) which aren't quite ready in AOKP. Of course, this is based on a stock ROM, so that probably explains that.

Having the same Wifi issues I had with AOKP - it just stops working after a while. It shows still connected. Turning off / on wifi temporarily corrects the issue. Interestingly, the phone is indeed connected to my router - so somehow it just "forgets" it has a connection? Guesswork here.
