Would you buy a used Nexus 7?

I'd be careful about it. There were a lot of production issues in the first few runs and that could be why someone would be interested in selling. I'd give it a good look over and ask your mate about it. Surely if it's a good mate though you can trust him/her.

If you're comfortable asking to check it out first though check for screen lift, check the battery graph and make sure other things such as the lock/power button and volume buttons are working. Also request the OEM charger and USB cord as you'll have troubles trying to charge with anything else. I can only get trickle charging from different samsung and generic USB chargers.

I own the 32GB N7 since more than 1 year. It is a great toy - but not a PC. If you know it's limitations, you can do a lot of things with it and some you cannot do with a PC - e.g. navigation.

I added a nifty Motorola bluetooth keyboard with trackpad. We use it during travel for all our IT needs.

For $100 it is a good deal if it has at least 16GB and is in good shape. But then you may want to compare with this:
