MAXX and QI (Wireless charging)

I noticed this the last few times I charge..

if the phone finishes and is still on the charger and the phone is fully charged then the charge shuts off.. my phone has been off charger for almost 12 hours but I physically picked it off the charger about 8-1/2 hours ago..

At fiurst I thought my battery life had already dropped but it makes sense now..

Anyone else have this same thing happen?

I have the 2 position Energizer and my Tablet was still showing a connection even though it was fully charged this AM and I grabbed it, I should try a wired connection again for charging and see how it does once I pull it off in the AM

I haven't used Qi charging myself with the Maxx, but I've used a Duracell Powermat charger with other devices, and the same behavior applies. When charging is complete, the circuit shuts down. I believe that this is for the safety of the battery pack, which can heat quickly at full charge if current is still applied.

Personally, I would use Qi charging for mid-day, top-up charging, and use plug-in charging for overnight, not monitoring charging. The good news is that the Maxx battery is so big that starting the day with a slight discharge is likely not that critical compared with other phones.

I use a Nokia QI pad for overnight charging, so my experience might be a little different.
In any case, the pad has a little indicator light that comes on when a device is connected, and I believe it goes out once a fully charge is reached.

I know when I grab my phone in the morning, the charge meter always shows 100%, and as of right now, it says it has been off the charger for 9 hours and 15 minutes, which would be about 6:30 this morning, which would be about when i usually grab my phone for the day.

A couple of things.....

1. As it was already mentioned, the circuit shutoff on the Qi charging device is by design to prevent overheating. But it has a secondary function as well.... longevity of life on the phone.

2. Longevity of the phone. As many know, Li-ion on a phone contains memory. And the memory effect does depreciate the Li-ion life. But it will last longer than Nickel based batteries. You never want to drain the battery completely, the Li-ion is designed for multiple charges. But you never want to leave it on the charger when it's full at the same time. Unfortunately, these phones don't have an energy cut off like Electric Cars do. So having a Qi charger that cuts off for you at 100% is a very good thing to have.

I have a silly question that I don't know if there's an answer for.

I have the Nokia charger (the one from AT&T for $25 on sale) and I keep it in my bedroom. When I'm going to bed at night and I put it on the charger, it makes that horrible "beep" when the charge activates that wakes my wife up. LOL. I have looked and looked and can't find it, is there a place in settings to turn that off? I even tried to connect my headphones and it still makes the noise.

If you know how to disable that noise please let me know!

You can if you're rooted. There is a post in the xda developers forums for the ultra (they don't have a Maxx forum there - crazy) that details the method.

You can also use the feature that silences the phone while you are sleeping. Mine makes no noise during sleep hours.

Unfortunately I'm not rooted nor do I plan on rooting for the time being. I'm hoping that we get some 4.4 lovin' here soon and I don't want to invalidate my device from any testing.

You know the funny thing, I have that set. It squelches all noise, except the Qi activation tone. I'm just going to alter my charging habits. It's not like I *have* to have it charging overnight. It lasts forever...

Yeah, that notification noise is annoying. Especially when the phone is borderline on the right spot for charging and it switches on and off forever. I don't know why it can't be turned off, it's not all that important to know whether the phone is charging. A little logo without sound would have sufficed.

I didn't realize before I bought a charging pad that you have place the phone in a specific spot for it to work. I bought a Qi charger that has only one charging point, IMO, the spot is too narrow. Now, I know I should have bought a charging that has multiple charging points.

Oh welll, at least I bought a fairly cheap charging pad. I still like using wireless charging thought. I gotta master phone placement for now.

So basically you can buy whatever wireless charger tickles your fancy, as far as features/brand/etc. goes, and it will work as long as it supports the Qi protocol, correct? Thinking a wireless charger will make a good present for me.

Some Qi chargers work better than others. I have the TYLT VU and it works great with the Maxx and any other Qi phone that I have tried. The VU has three power coils to reduce placement problems. It holds the phone at a 45' angle so the phone always goes on the same way. I don't have to align the phone. It works great. No on and off charging and it charges fast.

Someone gave me a pad type charger with a backup battery and it doesn't work as good at wireless charging. The phone has to be aligned just right and I get the charge on and off thing. Not good for a night stand because the phone charge indicator sound plays and the phone screen goes on and lights up the room. I wasn't liking that charger by morning.

TYLT VU charger works flawlessly. Very easy to use and it sits on my nightstand giving me a great view of my phone. Charges with a TPU case.

Agree with that. I got the TYLT VU shortly after release of the Maxx and it has been working great with the VZ Bumper case.

I've been using the Incipio Ghost 100 Qi charger I got from Verizon with the MAXX in an Otterbox defender case and it works great. It's the only way I charge it. You do have to set it down and align it correctly to get the optimum charge rate out of it. And if it gets bumped off it won't charge but I set it down at night and it's fully charged in the morning. No problem with the case but I have heard of other Qi chargers that don't like bulky cases.

I use the TYLT charger. Since the Kit Kat update it's frustrating as can be. Prior to the update, I would set my phone on the charger it would make it's sily sound to show it's charging and show the lightning bold with a circle and then it would go back to sleep. Now, I place it on the charger it does that same process, NO LESS THAN 10 TIMES IN A ROW! I have no idea why? It's like it connects, disconnects, connects, disconnects time and time again. I'm beginning to hate it. Anyone else experiencing this?

We had this happen once with a Droid Mini. I asked what was done to make it work and was told that they brushed the phone off and reset it on the charger and thren it worked fine. No problems snce with three Droits that use the TYLT charger.

My phone has no case, is clean and the TYLT charger is clean. It makes in difference if I place it on the charger in landscape or portrait mode it does the same. I will record it and post a video of it later. So frustrating.

Yes, I understand your frustration. Really, I'm not sure why it stopped happening. I wasn't the one that was charging a phone when it happened. I heard the racket though. I asked around here if it has happened since and they say it hasn't.

I wish I could try my phone on there for you to see what happens.

I'm with you on the frustrating lack of control over the charging behavior. Complained about its annoying sound effect earlier.

Here's a bit more data for you. I don't think it contains the answer to your question, but might provide some clues to someone smarter than me:

Before the Kit Kat upgrade, I had a week or so in which I got the same connect/reconnect loop that you have been experiencing. The annoying noise was playing every cycle even though the sound was turned off on the phone because it was bedtime for heaven's sake and my partner was trying to sleep. I was ready to throw the phone through the window.

Then the problem stopped, on its own. I did try to position the phone more carefully on the charger (I use the lie-flat one supplied by Verizon), but I really don't think that was what made the difference. Ever since, it's connected in one step.

Since Kit Kat, the sound has been silent at bedtime. This was a pleasant surprise, and I have no idea why it happened I just tested it to see if my sound settings are affecting it, but even on daytime volume settings the charger is now silent. The screen display showing it connecting still happens as before.

This isn't perfect, since I have no idea what silenced it or whether that's controllable. But I'll take it.

FYI: I'm on an unrooted Verizon Maxx.

So what do I conclude? 1. Things have been changing spontaneously with the charging software, independent of user behavior. 2. There is no explanation nor visible control for the sound and connection sensitivity, that I can find. 3. This lack of visibility/control is kind of stupid for such an important feature.

Oh, and 4. I still really like wireless charging, except for about 30 seconds a day while I stick the phone on the charger and wait to see what happens.

I know this doesn't directly contain the answer to the problem, but might drop some breadcrumbs in the right direction.

I experienced this before kit kat, I can't say that I have see it since the update.

Screaming QI charging notifications are a PITE. (Pain In The Ear) I charge mine exclusively with the QI on the night stand next to my pillow at night. The screech is intolerable but I really like the convenience of wireless charging.
That said, I am offering a suggestion that seems to work for me..press firmly on the phone as you set it on the charger and hold it there for a couple of seconds. Most of the time it does not screech at all and if does it does it only once. Perhaps it likes a firm touch?? :eek:

Maxx, KitKat, Incidio Ghost 100 charger here.
1. If I have a Bluetooth connected the phone doesn't screech when I put it on the charger. Turn off the Bluetooth device when the phone is safely put to bed.
2. Under Settings>Active Display>Sleep at night>check, if that works for you.
3. Under Settings>Sound>Battery full notification>uncheck. This step might eliminate the rapid on/off screeching when the charger connects and disconnects. With this set up, I don't get any of the symptoms in this post.

I have a new Droid Maxx phone and Nokia DT900 charger. The charging system system worked fine three or four times and now the indicator light on the charger is blinking rapidly as soon as its plugged in. The blinking is supposed to mean that there is a charging problem but it starts as soon as its plugged in without the phone on the charger.

Has anybody else had the same problem? How do I "reset" the charger?
