Not getting calls sometimes - is this problem my phone or my provider's network?

I have been running into an issue where I am not receiving some calls at all. I had people tell me they called me, but my phone hadn't rang and I had zero missed call notifications. So I checked it myself by calling my cell phone from a landline and it's true -- my phone doesn't ring, show an incoming call or display a missed call notification. Even though the landline I used was ringing and eventually took me to my cell's voicemail, my cell phone did nothing. It does seem to show if the person left a voicemail, but does not show the incoming call at all.

My phone is a Kyocera Rise and my provider is Virgin Mobile. Is this being caused by my cell phone or Virgin Mobile's network? This is a huge problem and I can't keep using Virgin Mobile if I am not going to receive incoming calls.

Well, I don't know how to "verify" my reception, but I did have at least one bar. It did not say "no service" or anything like that. After it happened, I tried again and the call went through. I do have issues with dropped calls and audio breaking up when I use my cell phone at home though. Maybe it's all related, but I really don't like that people are calling me and I never know unless they leave a voicemail (who still uses voicemail?).

most likely a virgin mobile problem...you can check your cell reception, by going into >settings>about phone>status, and signal strength will be listed...even with ~some~ reception (ie, doesn't say "no service") your phone may not ring...cell phones are never 100% reliable, i've even had times when people have told me that they had called me and my phone didn't ring, even though I know that I was in a great reception area...sometimes I was already on a call at the time and my phone still didn't register the missed call.

It is possible to still have signal and not get a call. The reason is that if all of the cell towers are busy with other traffic, your phone will still show that it has signal, but there would not be available bandwidth for the cell tower to establish a call to your phone. It is quite possible that the cell tower was just too busy to establish new calls at that time.

I can do that but the numbers it tells me about my signal strength really mean nothing to me...

As someone who has virgin mobile I can say that I have never had that happen to me. But when I had my keyocera rise, I had a lot of network problems. The antenna in that phone is really weak.

Are the signal strengths of phone's measured and published with the technical specs or anything? I want a new phone anyone since my Kyocera Rise is a little slow and the battery isn't great. I want to be able to use my cell phone instead of always borrowing people's landlines for important calls though, so I am wondering what phone I should get. How do I know which will have a strong signal?

Thanks all.
