I have searched this question on the web and received inconclusive answers. Is it harmful to leave a tablet or cell phone connected to the charger all the time, when not in use? or is it better for the battery to run it down and then recharge it?

From what I've read it's best to only have them connected to the charger when the battery needs to be charged. Afterwords you should disconnect it.

It is always best to plug it in when the device tells you it needs charging, and to remove it from the charger once charged. Some devices regulate the charging and cut off the battery from being charged if left plugged in, and so it won't hurt the battery on those devices if left plugged in overnight etc. I still would not leave it connected to the charger all the time.

Leaving the phone/tablet on the charger all time would have some influence on the battery life time.

Theoretically speaking it might be harmful. In real worlds use, most users update before they do any damage to their batteries. Laptops and tablets are a little different, because their batteries are pricy. I would not even bother with cellphones, if my battery dies OEM one usually cost not more than $10.

I just plug it in when I go to bed, unplug it when I wake up in the morning. I can't be on 100% watch to make sure I unplug it the second it charges.
I do, however, use a different charger than what my phone came with. My phone came with a 1.3 mAh charger. I use a 0.7 charger. It charges slower which is theoretically better for the battery. Should take longer to run it down, and also extend the life of the battery.
