Root [Virgin Mobile] [MK5 4.3] All Things Knox Discussion

Correct. Knox is heavily integrated and extends far beyond the apk's

The benefit for removing the Knox apk's is to allow supersu to gain root acess.. assuming you don't mind tripping the Knox flag (which I do not)

Its all in the bootloader. It says it all IMO. Its just that I paid $300 from my own money. So if anything happens which I doubt will, I will research and my main problem Is that I'm not sure I'm on warranty and idk if insurance will do anything. Samsung may have won this battle but the war is not over as devs always finds ways.

Try going into the download mode, I think that tells you if the flag is tripped. (I am not sure, so someone else who knows what they are doing try that.)

It will. Lol it trips if you flash anything through ODIN. Even custom recovery. I'm not 100% sure but it's all I read. I Just don't think we deserve a hard brick just to downgrade. Sometimes updates aren't so great and you to go back..

I know that you cannot flash any firmware lower than 4.3. You will not be able to update nor downgrade. I know you able to flash ota 4.3 or higher but idk about unofficial. Its just me but i woudnt want to test the limits right now. I will read and let you know.

It doesn't matter whether you trip it or not, once Knox is installed you have the Knox bootloader forever (at least until a workaround is discovered)

Tripping the Knox flag only disables the Knox security features particularly those that are used in the corporate world and voids warranty.

So once you install 4.3 with the Knox bootloader, rooting will only void your warranty and disable Knox security features. Which is why I rooted.. I don't care about either.

Actually you are able to upgrade firmware including official releases from Samsung, just once the knox flag is tripped, it's tripped for good. I think there is much confusion and inaccurate information circulating about Knox.

Well I'm not even sure if I'm on warranty. I just want to know if virgin mobile can give me a brand new phone IF anything happens. That's my only concern.

I wouldn't worry too much about Virgin Mobile. They are very lenient with returns in my experience. They typically ship the new phone to you and then supply a box for you to return your old device to them.

If I was in a contract with Sprint, I would be more concerned seeing as how you would need to return the phone into a dealer.

So it's that why you wouldn't care about voiding your warranty? Jw?

It's not so much that I don't care about voiding the warranty as it is that I don't care about disabling Knox which is a feature that I won't use.

As for the warranty, technically it doesn't cover damages due to modifying the operating system so I would have to say that if I bricked my device I would just buy a new phone. But if something happens to the device outside of a result of software modification, they are VERY good with returns and exchanges.

Yea I wouldn't be able to afford another S3.. I really don't care about warranty but hopefully i can get another S3 if anything happens. this knox will not stop me from rooting :D but it will probably hurt or maybe reconsider some development among S3 devs

Rooting is very possible I can say from experience. Knox also looks like it's here to stay in Samsung's future. So I'm sure it will get dev attention and it will be something that we'll get used to working around.. or at least working with.

Yea, hmm installed since android 4.2. Hopefully the guys such as chainfire has a way. Guess if anything goes wrong guess i gotta break the phone or something. Would hate to do it. But by the looks of this I feel that the process my be different for each phone. (A guess by results) by then they probably might have us on a 4.4 update or something like that.

I really don't think so.

It is safe to remove the Knox files.

Knox does not keep you from rooting nor does it keep you from putting on a custom recovery but doing so will trip the flag and disables Knox security. The Knox apps may prevent SuperSU from running but those apps may be removed. The Knox files that you see are only apps but the actually Knox flag is still in the bootloader. When you delete or freeze the Knox apps you are not removing it and you cannot reset the Knox flag. To verify this, boot into download mode and you will see the Knox flag has been tripped.
