How to get Microsoft RD Client working?

I'm no stranger to Remote desktop set ups. I use between my main PC at home and my kids computers. I have Imperio running on Android and managed to set it up with Home PC using port forwarding over 3389 etc...

But I was up for a challenge as Microsoft released an Android RD Client relatively recently. However I can't figure out how to set it up properly. I have scoured the web, FAQ etc, but I can't get it working.

Does anyone have this up and running and 'interpret' what needs to be stored in what field? I seem to have to setup a 'gateway' separate to the connection, and have to enter user/password multiple times?

I prefer 2X for my RDP Client, but I installed the MS app and had no problem getting it to connect.

I simply entered the IP of my remote connection (This one is a server running 2008 R2) over a VPN, my domain\username and password and left gateway blank. I saw that option for additional usernames so I assumed it was if you have multiple accounts on a domain. I'm a sysadmin so it would be handy to have one connection with all my user logins rather than having to setup multiple connections for each user.

I also tried a remote connection to my desktop over the internet using a nonstandard port and didn't have any problem there either.

I'd look at either the port or the firewall for starters.
