I have a Galaxy S3 and wanted an extended battery. About 2 weeks ago i bought this one off Amazon:
Hyperion Samsung Galaxy SIII 4200mAh Extended Battery + Titanium Grey Back Cover

It takes FOREVERRRRRRR to charge, and it doesnt seem to be very much extended. I dont mind the charge times, but cant have it down to 40% by lunch time ...

So, whats the tried/tested choice?

You can get an original 3000mAh one with cover, which retains NFC function. It's a Samsung OEM and you should be able to get it in the US. I have provided a link for information purposes for you, but if you can't find it where you are these guys ship worldwide.

I can highly recommend it as I use it myself. It is the closest you can get to retaining the original design and feel of the SGS3.

I just feel like if im willing to deal with the added size of the extended, which i am, why carry 2?

There must be an extended that actually works as advertised.
I don't care if you carry a 10 billion Amp extended battery in a 55 foot trailer behind you. When you absolutely positively MUST make that one last call and the extended battery dies, you're up the proverbial body of flowing water without the proverbial eating utensil.

When my battery dies I can swap in the spare and know, without any doubt, that I have at least a couple of hours of use left.

Besides, the larger the battery, the longer it takes to charge. I don't want my phone tied up for 72 hours every week charging the battery. My "in-use" battery charges in a couple of hours in the phone, while the spare (assuming I killed them both that day) charges in the external charger in the same couple of hours.

And when it comes time to replace the battery (if you know of a company that makes a LiIon battery that will ACTUALLY [as opposed to "in the commercial"] last 35 years, let me know - I'll buy all of its available stock), I spend a few bucks for 2 new regular batteries. You spend enough to buy a small cellphone. (Given the same treatment, both the normal battery and the "extended" one with 10 times the capacity will last just about as long. Larger capacity doesn't equal longer life. Treating the battery does - while my Note 3 was in for "repair" [they ended up giving me a new one], I was using my Motorola V551. I was using the original batteries it came with - back around 2003. And getting just as much use as I got back then.)

So for a few reasons, I'd rather carry 2 batteries made by a company that makes good batteries, rather than one gigantic one, even if made by the same company. I've been the "battery on the belt" communications route (I've been in this business since "portable" meant "only takes 2 strong men to lift", and I'd rather not re-invent 1970. I want communications when I need it (one of my lock screen icons is labeled 911) and I don't want to have to nail my pants on to keep them from falling down.

Just one old man's opinion. Your mileage probably DOES vary.

rubkat i appreciate your info, and understand your logic. Its not the route for me tho, I am not a dual-battery kinda guy. I have enough crap im loading into my pants in the morning, and enough things i need to worry about charging lol.

That being said, and considering i dont mind the added size, it seems an extended is right for me. Now to find one that actually performs ...

In the past I have had great experiences with Siedio batteries. Tho they are expensive ($60'ish i think?). So i have been going the ebay/amazon route to save a few bucks. My current one cost about $25 but its useless to me if it doesnt actually work.

If nobody can recommend something proven to be a substantial increase in uptime per charge, I will end up shelling out for the Seidio i suppose.

SEIDIO | Innocell 3500mAh Super Extended Life Battery for Samsung Galaxy S III

To give some perspective, when I had their product on my Incredible, I would get as much as 48-60 hours without touching a plug, with HEAVY use for work all day long. The life of their battery seemed to be about 6-8 months before degrading.

I have tried a few korea specials, and they just didnt compare.

Did you follow the charging instructions that came with it when u bought it.

Either way you must be doing something wrong if your extended battery is only lasting you a few hours. I have a Gorilla Gadgets 4500 battery and it last me 2 days sometimes 3.
