I MUST be able to hear SMS or Returning phone

One thing I need from a phone is the SMS capability and I simply am not able to hear the pathetic weak beep. I know this forum is filled with developers and I am 100% certain that there are others who need to be able to hear their SMS.

If this is something not possible with this phone please let me know as I need to return it within 15 days of receipt.

I have modified the incoming call ringtone and applied a different ringtone to a friend, but I can do nothing with SMS notification.

I know a couple of people have reported such problems, but I don't have either problem. I hear my phone just fine, and that's before the audio mod I applied once I had root. Given the forum isn't flooded with these complaints, I'd personally ask Google for an exchange and see how it goes with the replacement.

I have rooted and also applied the volume boost above BUT I cannot apply anything to SMS notification and thus the problem.

sorry out of ideas now.

if you decide to send it back, make sure to unroot, factory reset, lock bootloader and reset the flag

Have you tried Viper4? (Need root)

It raised the sound of pretty much every tone that comes from my speaker. In fact I had to tail it back a little because my notification volume was too loud when only a notch or two short of being on mute.

Download Zedge and search loud SMS in ( notifications section ) ...these sounds are VERY VERY loud. Download one and then set it as your default to try...trust me... if you can't hear these.... I don't know what to tell you.

I have the Nexus 5 and have installed some on my phone... very very loud!

Of the built-in sounds I've found Chimes to be the loudest. I've got a Tasker profile set up that uses TTS after the chime that says "Text Message." After 30 seconds if I haven't opened the SMS app then it chimes again and says "Text Reminder." That repeats for 2 hours if I don't hear it.

I'd consider returning it for another one, it could have a bad speaker.

Thank you but I see I made myself rather unclear.,.. I have loud ringtones, Pandora playbacks, Netflix etc BUT my problem is with ONLY the SMS notification sound. No matter what I do I cannot change the SMS notification sound away from that weak beep.

Perhaps and this is a real possibility, since all my other sounds after I did the manual mod are quite loud, I do NOT know how to properly change/access the process to change the SMS notifications.

Whether any of them are satisfactory (as I say, I hear mine just fine using "Tethys" for my SMS notification sound), you can change your SMS notification sound under settings. I use 8sms for my default SMS app, but I believe Hangouts pulls up the same SMS sounds dialog. Have no idea if there is a difference in how hangouts plays the sound since I disabled hangouts from day 1.

Add a custom sms tone (plenty of guides on how to do this). I use star wars tones and it's plenty loud enough

Under settings, I cannot seem to find sms notification and I would like to get rid of hangouts but not sure of how to do this. First however I need to find where the SMS notification switch is located.

+1 on the Sms sound being unchangeable and extremely quiet. I really don't care though, as my phone is always by my hip. I was spoiled with touchwiz on my S3, but I'd rather have Google over Samsung any day, no matter what the fault.

Settings > data settings> more

You can switch the default messaging app there, assuming you've downloaded another one

Also note, you can change the ringtone from within the hangouts app. Under settings > sms

To changes the SMS sound open up hangouts (if you are using this) then

Settings --> SMS --> Sound

Once there pick another sound that is better for you.

No problem here - volume seems no different to any other phone I've had. I always set my sms notification sound to a sonar ping. That sound seems to carry very well and I have it on around 50% volume

How do you send text message without hangouts?

You can disable hangouts as your default sms app. You can then download one of your choice such as handcent, 8sms, go sms ( just to name a few.)

You can then make your new sms app your default app. In hangouts go to settings/sms enabled (touch that )/default sms app then pick the one you just downloaded!
