WORKING WIRELESS TETHER!
*Root Required*

Virgin Mobile Galaxy S3 MK5 4.3

Thanks to jdsingle76 for helping me along the way. He has put up with endless questions and he has graciously helped me with MK5 to no end. I found this app after tirelessly searching the web for a fix to 4.3 breaking wireless tether. I mentioned it to JD and he immediately began testing it for me and after checking with Fabio they were able to get it working.

Thanks to Fabio Grasso developer of "Wireless Tether Router"! This guy has built a solid app and his customer service is phenomenal! His app reviews are spot on; he responds to emails non-stop and will work with you personally to get the app working on your device. I encourage everyone to support this developer and leave a positive app review for his hard work.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter&hl=en
2. Use these settings:

  • Interface: wlan0
  • Method: 3 - HostApd
  • Channel: 1
  • Encryption : WPA2-psk
  • Drivers: nl80211
  • HostApd Patch: UNCHECKED
3. Enable Wifi FIRST before enabling the wireless tether! This ensures the SSID is broadcast.

The stock MK5 kernel doesn't seem to support wifi tether or barnacle. I've tried literally every single one of the releases, beta, experimental and stable and none work on the stock kernel since the update to MK5. They all install fine, allow me to run the program but wireless tether says it starts with errors, and barnacle starts but doesn't transmit the Wi-Fi signal. Other apps I've tried fail as well. I'm so desperate for this issue to be fixed that I will gladly donate to anyone who can modify the kernel to allow wireless tether or can find a way for wireless tether to work on the stock MK5 rom (without having to flash another rom.. I prefer stock for some reason ha)

I have tried editing the settings.db with SQLite Editor with no success. Not good enough with kernels to be able to modify them.

Think there is going to be any fixing this? I just ordered my S3 from the sale... all I use my VM phones for is general research out while working (Googling stuff) and very light tethering for my tablet while on the road. It is going to deliver with 4.3.

The phone does me no good whatsoever if I can't simply root (staying stock) and wifi tether. I may as well just order the Supreme which is easily rootable without all the fuss of voiding a warranty (who knows if VM starts checking it).

Haven't upgraded to 4.3 so I can't test myself, but I know on my Nexus 5 with T-mobile after I edited settings.db and added a new entry to the global table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0. I had to change "APN protocol" to IPv4 for tethering to work.

It seems SQLite Editor isn't letting me edit the settings.db

Any insight? I get this error:

Okay, not sure how to go about editing the setting.db on a computer. I have the file on my pc but not sure what to use for editing. Funny, SQlite will let me open and edit every other database except settings.

For editing sqlite databases on Windows I use: SQLite Database Browser | Free Development software downloads at SourceForge.net

On the Mac I use: SQLite Professional - Mac OSX SQLite Manager

I believe that sqlite has an option to lock databases, but I do not remember.

Britton, I found an issue in Wifi Tether for Root Users, it does not like all the root SU programs... seems to prefer SuperSU straight off the market.

Also it gave me a hell of a time when Barnacle was installed at the same time (not running, just installed). As soon as I removed Barnacle it started working great.

Make sure you have Sprint Connection Optimizer turned off (under MORE in wifi settings).

I have been sorting out root and wifi tether on the Supreme and have it about 90% working (only issue is you lose wifi and tether after the phone sleeps). I would prefer to keep my S3, but need thethering (and I'm cheap).

Let me know if you have any luck.

Wow man! So you have wireless tether working for the VM Galaxy S3?

Which version of Wireless Tether are you using? Is it the TrevE mod or the one from the market?

What settings in Wireless Tether are you using?

No I meant I have it going on the Supreme. However someone did post about getting a version working in the Boost S3 all things root forum, might want to check there.

I bought both the S3 and the Supreme during the sale, debating which to keep, but the Supreme is a hell of a phone and has a nicer screen and killer battery life (5 hours sceen on and 12 hours stadby put it at 15% after starting at 90%). Unfortunately it will see little to no dev support.

Yeah I've been looking at the specs. Pretty sweet and not a bad price.

Not sure if this will help, but I found a post about the Samsung Galaxy S3 4.3 tethering not working on T-Mobile: TrevE Wifi Tether on 4.3? - xda-developers

This then lead me to here which talks about copying some files: Hotspot on 4.3 TouchWiz? - xda-developers

I know that this is a different carrier, but thought that it may help. And if the settings.db file doesn't contain any personal information you could try uploading it for others to play with. What exactly were you trying to modify in it?

I attempted to add "tethering_dun_required" with a value of "0" to the global table but just that simple edit screwed up my phone beyond belief. It required a full wipe and reinstall of the stock rom which turned out to be a good thing because now my phone runs smoother than ever. Funny how a clean install can be so nice sometimes ;)

Thanks so much for the info. That is very nice. I have combed over countless threads, fixes, and every version of the Wireless Tether mods. No luck. In the process of this hunt, I have discovered that many devices that have updated to 4.3 are not successful in running Wireless Tether anymore so I now assume it is something in the software in 4.3 that Wireless Tether hasn't been updated to function correctly with. I first believed it was a Knox issue but I have seen similar issues on non-Knox devices running 4.3 so I doubt that is the case although it is possible. I have contacted the developer of Wireless Tether for insight as well as TrevE

Heck, I don't even see a forum here for the Supreme. I'm thinking about getting it just for the tether. I don't really care about roms. What settings did you use on Wireless Tether to get it working on that device?

The Supreme has a really easy root, download the file in post #16 from this post, then follow instructions in post #22.

[Q] ZTE Supreme - Page 3 - xda-developers

For tethering I have been using the stock "Wifi Tether for Root Users" from the Play Store. Basically just set it to the Nexus 5 CDMA/LET profile and it sets up the correct settings. There are a couple of bugs I'm working on... one, when you let the phone sleep it works but when you wake it the phone kills the Wifi Tether app... and two, when you enable encryption it works but when you turn off the Wifi Tether app then you cannot enable regular wifi on the phone until you reboot (seems to be a common issue right now with the app).

From the looks of it ZTE got in on an amazing IPS screen (it looks so much better than the S3 to me) and built a mid-tier phone around it. The sucker is big though, it is right on the edge of feeling like a Samsung Note, more of a phablet than a phone.

I would like to stick with the S3, but every time I think of the $100 price difference and how much I like the screen I want to keep the Supreme... although since I'm still in the return period I may bounce both and go back to the HTC Desire and wait for root/tethering to mature on it.

Nevermind, posted at the same time... saw you tried Treve. May just have to pony up the $15 tether fee for a month to give the modders some time.

Sadly, the $15 tether addition is not available for the S3. I would gladly pay it if that were the case :)

I hate to steer this thread in another direction but I can't resist talking more about this Supreme. I have read some negative things about ZTE in the past so I have mixed feelings about it but everytime I look at the videos of it on YouTube I really want to consider buying it. In a way, it looks like an upgrade over the S3. OS-wise I suppose it isn't an upgrade considering the S3 is on 4.3 but everything I am experiencing now as a root user makes it feel like 4.3 is more of a downgrade.

My other concern about the Supreme is the camera and I have one question about that then I will stop hijacking this thread via ZTE ;)
I am an avid photographer and I love the settings within the S3 camera menu particularly the ISO and Metering settings. Does the Supreme's camera app have those features and do you like the quality of the photos?

Feel free to respond via PM to avoid cluttering the thread with "off-topic" :D

Those were my two decisions I had to choose from. The sole reason I chose Samsung was only because it was newer. And the zte supreme was an upgraded version of a really old phone. Sure maybe age might not matter but to me in the lomg run it will. Sure it's arguable. But after having my evo v 4g. I decided to just wait for a more updated phone. I hear camera and screen size are great. But I absolutely refuse to get an updated version of an old sprint phone. Personal preference :)

Thanks for the work you put into this. Luckily I had actually bought this app already while working tethering issue on the Supreme.

Oh, and just for sh*ts and giggles since I still have the Supreme... tested these exact settings on it with Wireless Tether Router and it works perfectly. It even gets rid of the bug that murders wifi until the phone is rebooted, with Wireless Router you can enable wifi again after using it.
