Android 4.4.1 - Imminent (ITS LIVE-post #23)

He was talking about other phones. The Nexus 5 should get it immediately. Why else should I even have a Nexus 5 if not for faster updates? If this is the way in which Google gives out it's updates, it won't be long until I look elsewhere.

A few days is minor in comparison with how android updates generally are. Outside of Nexus/GPE devices, there is exactly one other device line even on 4.4 and they haven't all received it either. Other popular models that HTC or Samsung make are still at least a month away from getting 4.4, if not longer due to carrier interference.

i buy nexus because i hate touchwiz/sense/what ever LG calls it.

and just because Google gives the update to samsung to start rolling out the same time google rolls it out them self doesn't mean the S4 and Note 3 will get the updates the same time. Samsung first needs to ruin the update and make sure it works with Touch wiz, and then the carriers need to approve it.

Every carrier or manufacturer does it the same.

The difference is waiting maybe a few weeks on a nexus or 6+ months on a non nexus

I am dissapointed. This is my first Nexus update and I have to wait for days, maybe weeks. This is completely stupid. How is this even possible? How can Apple roll out updates for all of it's devices on the same day, for every country, no matter the carrier ? I dunno, but things aren't as peachy as they seemed at firston Android.

It's also important to note that trying to download an Apple update on day 1 of its availability is often frustrating due to server overload from all the members trying to update their device. Downloads can be very slow or even hangup if not fail. This is the exact reason why Google does staged rollouts.

A couple quick points:

1. Even though Apple releases their updates to everyone at the same time, that doesn't mean everyone can update on day 1. You're either looking at a 4+ hour project with download speeds as if you were on dial up, or you're going to wait. Every single friend I have with an iPhone waited 2 weeks to update to IOS7 because of this.

2. You have a choice with Android. You can update immediately by doing it manually, or you can wait for your place in line to get it OTA. Doing it manually will take you about the same amount of time as updating an iPhone (30 min, give or take) after the server backlog dies down, and you can do it on day 1. Waiting your place in line will go even faster, and the update will probably take 10 minutes start to finish once your turn comes around.

The sky isn't falling. Google is just a little more practical than Apple in their methodology. If waiting a week or two is so distasteful that you'd rather go back to Apple, go ahead, and enjoy that 4+ hour wait on day 1 for the next IOS release.

So you read all of the news of previous Apple updates that went without any problems then?

Thought not.

Good grief, the phone just came out less than 2 months ago, has the newest Android OS and is already rolling out an upgrade, and you're throwing a fit because you don't have it two days after the rollout begins?

SMH.

Look, Google really doesn't care what hardware you use as long as you're using Google services. They sell Nexus phones basically at cost. So your threat to "look elsewhere" isn't likely to amount to much.

Updates for Nexus phones are available before others, and if you are impatient, you can sideload them easily. The availability of update files and system images and the ability to download and install them are also selling points for the Nexus line.

Yes. The camera is too slow and I want the update. Is it really that bad to ask for such a thing? I didn't want to start a flame, but come on, I got the Nexus 5 to get the latest updates first, not to wait in line.

all other replies covered pretty much everything. i'll just say couple of words not covered by other posts.
technically google did not release the update to end users yet . this update contains camera and sound fixes mainly. also a new kernel, radio, updated bootloader. these may adversely affect millions of handset sold already. thats why this update is for developers only they are side loading it, playing with it, experimenting with it to the last bit, posting their findings on the internet. google will take all these reports under consideration, finalize the update, and push it to end users as OTA by next week. so we mere mortals and ex-ios users like you can have a relatively bug free experience.
for example: i was going to side load on day 2 but noticed that some users are noticing lower signal strength:thinking: as i have poor signal at my location so i'll wait till it gets resolved.

It isn't a developer only update, the techy android-enthusists types just know how to apply it manually faster than via OTA.

Although they do keep it to very few devives to begin with to make sure it isn't damaging devices.

As Google engineer Dan morrill explains:

Rollouts are conducted in phases. Typically they start at 1% of devices for around 24 - 48 hours; we watch the return rates and resulting device checkins and error reports (if any), and make sure nothing looks wrong before sending it to more. Then typically it goes to 25%, 50%, 100% over the course of a week or two.
What the percentages mean is that when your device checks in, it has a 1% chance (for example) of being offered the OTA. If it doesn't (randomly) get an offer, it will never get an offer until the next batch.
IOW, once your device checks in and gets turned down, that's it until the next batch. Mashing on the "check for updates" button just causes your device to check in again, and get automatically turned down again. Think about how that makes your device feel! WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE PHONES?!
That said, once the new batch does start, hitting that button does give you a new roll of the dice -- but once. Since devices usually only check in for system updates every 24 hours (I think? Certainly on a many-hours basis) this can get you your shot sooner than it would happen on its own.
So, mash away. :) Just be patient, and mashing on it more often than once or twice a day isn't going to gain you anything.
Edit: also, keep in mind that this isn't first-come/first-served. You're not racing other devices to get your slot in the current batch, or something.

OTAs get offered randomly

you are waiting inline with other people with Nexus 5s, other phones like the HTC ONE, S4, G2 aren't even on 4.4 yet. think of it like VIP and general admission tickets to an event. you buy VIP to skip the lines but you still end up waiting in a much shorter faster line with other VIP people.

do you even logic?
