4.4.2 update

Battery life is definitely inconsistent. Some days I can get 5 hours of screen, others only 2. Right now I'm on 28 hours off the charger with 1.5 hours of screen at 25% brightness and have 44 percent left. Rxpert managed to pull off a 7 hours of screen at one point.

I haven't been able to get anywhere near that recently. :( (although I don't think I could stare at my phone for 1/3 of my day again either though :p )

I agree its really inconsistent. Some days I'll listen to a podcast for 4 hours and be at 95%. Others I'll be down around 80 already.

I've been booted for 4 hours so far today and am at 77% --- 0.5 hrs screen on time w/ an hour of audio streaming.

I understand what you guys are saying 100%, I've already read all about how OTAs work and how to sideload, etc. I do not have a computer that I can use to sideload, and I am not using the force method, so I am stuck waiting for OTA. I agree with Google and their reasoning for the way they do OTAs, but my gripe isn't that others are getting it before me. My complaint is that Nexus 4s and Nexus 7s are getting it before ANY Nexus 5.

So please know that I understand how their doing it, I just don't agree with it.
Yeah, I can understand the dilemma. It's one reason why I wasn't a fan of them removing the ability to flash an "update.zip" from the stock recovery. In the old days, you could force the ota without being tethered which would have been perfect for this situation. :(

Since you don't have a computer, I take it the device is still locked and not rooted?

Correct, I am 100% stock, still locked, no root. My Nexus 5 is in the out-of-the-box state, besides all the apps and accounts, etc that I've added.

And I do have a computer at my workplace, but it does not let me download and install the SDK/ADB thingies, which I have no experience in anyway. And I know the admin would not approve, since she doesn't even let any employee have the damn WiFi password...

just took a photo, clicked the photo icon, the photo disappears and is NOT in the gallery.I have disabled the photo app.

Now I'm confused because this is not what you described before (I may be the one misunderstanding).

I'm not sure what you mean by photos disabled. I turned off auto backup which does render it basically useless. If I take a photo with the stock (4.4.2) photo app, the photo appears as an icon-sized photo on the screen. If I tap that, the photo appears in what is obviously a scrollable display of all my photos, most recent first. In the top left is the colot pinwheel symbol for the photos app. To the right is the share icon, delete icon and menu icon. If I tap the menu icon and choose edit, I get a choice of what photo app I want to use unless I tap always.

I don't know what is happening at your end. Sorry.

That's a bummer. What about a local library?

My software says I'm running on 4.0.4. Is there an updated software out??
Looking at your post history, it would appear that you have a Galaxy S2. 4.0.4 is about 22 months old as far as android revisions go, but 4.0.4 is likely the latest official software for you device. You would either have to wait (though unlikely) for Samsung to update your device officially to 4.4.X or be willing to flash a stock android type rom like Cyanogenmod to get 4.4.X.

tap the photo and then tap the icon in the TOP LEFT.It then disappears to no idea.

as far as battery life, I don't see any difference before or after, but I only recently got the update. I get about 12 hrs between charges (I charge when the battery hits 15%) I typically have 3-5 hrs of talk time, mixed game and gps use. With my old s3 I could barely go 6 hrs and the phone was dead. the n 5 is a huge improvement for me.

Never been to this one (just moved here 4 months ago) but even if they do have public computers, the restrictions are probably even greater than my desk computer at work and they most likely wouldn't allow me to install the SDK/ADB either. If only there was another way, like installing a simple apk or something. lol

Coming from the N4, I'm astounded by the battery life. For similar typical use, I'm getting almost twice the battery life. Twice I've forgotten to charge it overnight and survived the next day without restrictive battery-saving measures. In fact, I don't use any extraordinary battery saving measures ever. I use Google Now, location services, auto backup, etc, always on. And it's nice to see screen-on time over a few hours without the low battery indication, even with a larger, brighter screen than the N4.

I don't use my phone as an entertainment device. Maybe battery life would seem horrid if I played more games or watched movies on it. And I don't know what more to expect from the speaker for the same reason. It produces clear, audible sound. It does lean to the low end of the spectrum, probably to cater to people wanting more "bass" from a tiny thing. I just don't care to knock the phone because it doesn't have Bose or Beats branded speakers, I don't expect a hand-sized computer to produce great sound.

Sorry if that got off topic

Lol...I had the nexus 4 and battery life was actually better then my nexus 5...chalk that up to LTE...Are you using LTE?

Sound quality could be light years better, not Bose....but better then it is in its current state.

Update didn't really help these issues to much for me...however at full volume the speaker during say YouTube is a lil better, not blow your doors of better, but a little bit louder.

The audio might be a defect, so I'll comment more after you receive your replacement and it is on 4.4.2+.

I'll agree that Google's stock camera software is atrocious. If there's one area that needs to be fixed, it's this. Kodak is floundering, and it makes me wonder why Google doesn't try working with them to improve their software. It would seem like a win-win to me.

Erratic is what I'm hearing from the inter web...lol. However my battery is just fairly bad to say the very least. In 2013 leading into 2014 I really don't want battery life to be something I'm concerned about. LG figured out how to get the G2 to last all day, surely they could have done the same with its cousin the nexus 5.

Sound I think is hardware...and I'm going to say I'm about 99% sure it is because earlier I stopped by a T-Mobile store and tested out its video recording. Thankfully the store was absolutely dead and was able to record in a pretty quite atmosphere and heard zero hissing or background noise... By the way the phone was on 4.4
That gives me hope that my replacement will not be another dud.

I didn't mean it like that. What I meant was that every Nexus 5 should have been updated before Nexus 4s and 7s were even touched. I understand that they all get them at the same time.

Ah, I understand now.

But whats the reasoning? If you don't have an issue with the way they do the updates, you can surely see where the method you're suggesting is heading.

1-2 weeks to update the nexus 5
then 1-2 weeks to update the nexus 7 (2013)
then 1-2 weeks to update the nexus 10
then 1-2 weeks to update nexus 4
then 1-2 weeks to update the nexus 7

Or they can do them all and get it done in 2 weeks :)

Additionally, rest easy knowing next year when theres the next nexus you won't be waiting for updates.

Its kitkat thats hammering us. Tighter integration with googles core location services.

I'd be willing to bet we'd have better battery life if we were back on 4.2 as well.

Agreed...

However I'm leaving it up to the Google peeps up in Cali to make owning a stock nexus a battery hogs dream. It was always said that stock Android should see the best of battery life with a Vanilla running version of Android...Knock Knockkkk..It's me Google, please give me some smooth sailing Android that will stop sipping on my battery.
