4.3 update Discussion and issues HERE !!!

That's fine, thank you Evohicks. Otherwise, I'd have 'kissed an awful lot of frogs' before finding the princess! As of yet, I have only been able to check it out on my tablet Note's 4.3 but I still cannot find an f(x) symbol. I will persist with it when time permits and hopefully, I will be able to also check it out on a shop's Note 3 before too long.

The S-Finder is the essential clue and according to S-Finder's 'Help' there should be an f(x) button available when 'Handwriting' selected but as yet I cannot find it.

.

Solved!!! I did not have 'Direct Pen Input' enabled in 'Settings / Controls / S Pen'. As soon as I did that it all worked as shown in the video by Lucidmike that Evohicks quoted at post #211.

Thank you both Evohicks and Neograndizer - I'd still be muttering and gnashing my teeth without your help!!

No problem, glad to have helped someone, looking at the above posts though I don't think I will update the Note 2 atm unless a patch or the like is released, I do find that my Note 3 uses around the same battery life as my wife's Note 2 did in a day, maybe a tad more, so maybe 4.3 is a little heavier on the juice, hard to tell though being different hardware.

Updated my phone yesterday to the new 4.3. Today at work sitting on my desk, the phone randomly lights up. This is not the hover for status action, this is light up as if I pushed the button (which I'm not). I use the face recognition unlock and this shows when it turns on, then determines it can't see my face then goes to the numeric unlock pad. After a few seconds, it cuts back off. I've never had this happen before. Any thoughts?

I'm glad to hear it all got sorted out. Thanks for the update. :D

I've used my note with the new update for a while... and there are some things that really really really annoy me...

1. my google calendar stopped notifications. The amount of meetings I was late for was not cool.
Wow. That would seriously get my goat. I stopped relying on alarms and notifications a long time ago when working with Windows Mobile. Which is why I need a 'Today' screen setup for a quick glance of upcoming tasks and events.

2. battery (although not noticed at first) drains fast. Overnight I go from 60% to 12 on 6hrs of sleep. On the weekends, my phone just dies since I sleep longer
I would investigate that battery drain. If left in standby, the battery should actually have stellar life. In fact it should be on par with 4.1.2. The battery only tanks when put into work under moderate to heavy conditions.

I have 'light' duty days in which the battery will actually be good as 4.1.2. I don't see a difference in battery life. However, when I go to moderate to heavy duty days, the battery life sucks. I average about 4 hours screen time (I could cram 5 hours on 4.1.2). And that's with auto-brightness (with adjustment set to 0), auto-tone and movie mode enabled in 4.3. I used the same screen settings on 4.1.2, but with auto-brightness set to max.

So yeah, battery literally sucks with the 4.3 update.

3. for some reason i can no longer make my keyboard get smaller for one hand operation with pinching... don't know how to make it work again, as I cannot find the settings :(
Yeah, pinching no longer works. You actually have to hit the keyboard button on the bottom left corner (beside the symbol key). Then you have the choice between 'Normal', Floating' and 'One-handed operation'.

4. the phone lags a LOT. From turning on when I press the home or power buttons, to opening an app, to opening a typing field and even typing shows way later than i typed it.
No argument there. It does lag from time to time. I found this more often than not now. What's equally annoying is I need to restart my device every so often as well because of it. This is not as stable as 4.1.2.

5. I haaaaaaaaaaaaaate the ugly locked screen text or missed call or email notification... if they are trying to be like apple and display everything on the locked screen, at least 1) make it pretty and 2) give me an option to opt out!
Yep. Hate it too as well as the 'goofy' contact and kiddie icons.

6. this one is probably most important... i get notifications when i need to update my apps in the notification bar. However, when I click on the link and it opens play store it just keeps loading and loading. It never actually opens the store. so I have to close the app, then manually go into my apps, find play store and select to update manually.
The same has happened to me as well, but not often. The problem I have is when I do multiple updates. It actually kicks my Note 2 in the teeth and gives it a seizure. I have to wait a bit before I can work with it again.

The Google Play store is just unstable and causes ill-effects on my Note 2 whenever in use. Random events. Sometimes it will behave. Or it will cause lag. Or in worst case, make me hit the power button for a few seconds to force a reboot.

I can't think of what else, but I'm sure there are other things I don't love.

All in all... not happy.
There's a myriad of screwed up things Samsung did with this update.

  • no pop-up browser (need to resort to third party apps)
  • light coloured themes (bad thing for OLED screens; sucks more power)
  • no S Pen tweaking for the default keyboard
  • no changing the stupid 'Hi Galaxy' command
  • no swipe lock with secure lock
  • lock screen is useless for putting anything on there
  • personal message is a joke (limited characters and I can't use Owner info with it).
  • lock screen has no options when going with a secure lock (more freedom with 4.1.2)
I really am disappointed to say the least. I expected better. Instead I get a gutted upgrade removing things and adding what? Nothing much. A floating keyboard here, 'better' RAM utilization (yeah... right, chewed it up more like it)...

My Flash count has been reset, otherwise the phone stops you even making the OTA request to update. I wonder if loading the ROM through Odin will work?
You unrooted and reset the flash counter? If yes, you might want to try using KIES. This happened with my unrooted stock Note 10.1. It wouldn't allow me to do OTA. I actually had to resort to KIES to get the update.

Updated my phone yesterday to the new 4.3. Today at work sitting on my desk, the phone randomly lights up. Have you tried using another type of lock (swipe, pattern, PIN or password)? Does it happen on any of them as well? Not sure. I have PIN and my screen stays off. Could be a bug with the face unlock it seems.

I can't get my keyboard to vibrate since update. Can't stand the lock screen. Can't stand thr generic contact photos... Any way to put in a different default?
There are TWO ways to set haptic feedback for the keyboard.
1) Settings > My device > Sound
--scroll down to 'Samsung keyboard' and enable 'Key-tap vibration'
2) Settings > My device > Language and input
--tap the cog/gear icon beside 'Samsung keyboard' and scroll down to 'Key-tap feedback'. Enable 'Vibration'.

To change intensity of Haptic feedback, go to Settings > My device > Sound > Vibration intensity. Change the slider under 'Haptic feedback'.

I'm tempted to reset the phone to default and not update.
Hard wipe and reset back to factory defaults will NOT bring back 4.1.2. Once successfully updated, there is no 'official' way to revert back.

I haven't updated as of yet, but does the Note 2 now work with Galaxy Gear? Also, did anyone try the SD card feature? :)
No Galaxy Gear here... so can't help there. Sorry.

The app to SD card is good for some apps, not all. This depends on the dev and code. If they enable it and programmed it properly, it's great. But if not, the bulk of the app will still reside in internal storage. I had a 1GB game that only moved 50MB of data to the card. This was true for a few others as well. Not the update's fault; just poorly coded apps/games that don't support move to SD.

All settings for vibration are on. Just once update completed I lost all keyboard vibration. I reinstalled Kii keyboard as well, nada.
I do not know what the issue is. I just downloaded Kii and tested it. I also tested default Samsung keyboard, Thumb Keyboard 4 and Swype. With the exception of Swype, vibration worked fine without any issues. The problem I had with Swype is I needed to enable System Haptic feedback for it to work.

Only thing I can suggest is to do a cache wipe in Android Recovery Console. Then reboot into Safe mode. If the haptic feedback still doesn't work with stock default keyboard, then something in the update got buggered up. You may need to do a hard wipe back to factory defaults unless someone else can chime in another solution.

Yea those goofy kiddy contact photos are so terribl. Why no way to just default it to something else?

Just funny because the whole idea about android is its supposed to be flexibl, yet it feels with this update you're stuck with a lot of stuff.

Well, enough is enough...

Couldn't stand it, so attached the same pic to all the contacts without an image just so I didn't have to look at them.

I updated early this morning, and then went on with my busy day and forgot about it, and then tonight my phone gives the error message that it is not recognozing my sim card.
So of course I re-insert the sim and turn the phone back on, and it boots up just fine, like there was never any issue (thank God). It just makes me wonder...........

The guys over at xda are reporting the Verizon update started going out this morning if you want it. You have to use Verizon upgrade assistant on your computer to get it. They aren't seeing it if you just try and update using the phone. I haven't seen it on my computer yet so don't know if it's regional or mine just hasn't updated yet

Unfortunately each update behaves differently with each device. Some are fine, others (as you have see in this thread experience adverse effects). Comes with the territory...

On a side note, I had that happen to me on 4.1.2. But it was a carrier issue and an odd one at that. I thought it was the SIM going wonky, but the carrier heard similar complaints from other users (but not everyone had the issue; just a random pocket of users). I had the SIM recognition error, emergency calls only, no signal, etc. It drove me nuts.

https://imageshack.com/i/0moxo8p check this image out..there is no option to individualy restrict.it...this is after the update...geezzz...T_T
I just noticed the soft screen buttons on the bottom. What phone do you have? The Note 2 doesn't have it since it has hardware buttons.

Is that the actual bottom of the screen? I can scroll down and still restrict individual apps in background. The feature is still present in 4.3. But again, the carrier could have removed it.

Anybody had bad resolution on browser pics (dolphin browser) as well as instagram pics by chance? Facebook pics are still fine, great resolution like they should be....any way to change the resolution in settings or somewhere by chance? I can't find it anywhere other then camera
I don't have any resolution anomalies or artifacts when browsing with Puffin, Chrome or stock browsers. Probably an app issue. Did you try emailing the devs about the issue? Make them aware of it? Again, nothing strange here when viewing pics in photobucket using the stated browsers.

Another annoying issue with this update. Samsung push service automatically enables itself again whenever I use the store. Despite the fact that I disabled the damn thing. I have to keep going in and disabling it. Never had to do that when on 4.1.2 (once disabled, it stayed disabled). But there's been a lot of updates being done in Samsung account that probably triggers it now. Stupid.

Well, on a side note, I had a nightmare. I dreamt my Note 2 committed suicide. It literally fell right off the table and smashed itself to pieces. Despite the fact that it had the Seidio Vitreo tempered glass protector and in an Otterbox Commuter case.

I literally woke up and inspected my Note 2 right after that. Phew, it's still okay...

UK Sim free.

Updated today.

My stock email with Hotmail no longer syncs on its own. Any ideas?

Also had to figure out how to rename the Bluetooth and cannot have the name as many characters now.

Also if I now go to check for new updates it says "this device has been modified and no updates are available" or words to that effect.

Are your devices doing that or is there something wrong?

Thanks
