dont know exactly what youre asking for in regards to SMS backup........ if you want copies of all your text messages thats not gonna work unless you were rooted on the old phone and root the new phone (assuming thats what youre looking for)

as for contacts.... if your old phone was an android phone then your contacts should already be backed up on your google account........ if they arent for some reason....... goto your old phone and click on the settings then export them...... copy that file to your new phone and import them

if your old phone was an iCrap phone then I cant help you.... not sure if theres an easy way to transfer them other than the store

Yeah unless your old phone was a relic (or a non-smartphone), your contacts should be synced when you enter your google account credentials into the G2.

If you have an old Android device running an old OS, there used to be "phone" contacts (read local storage only) and "google" contacts (read synced to the cloud/google servers). If that's the case, hopefully there's an option on your previous device to export contacts to a .csv file. Then you can copy that to the sdcard partition of your G2, open up the Phone app, press the contacts tab, then settings button and use the import/export option.

I think you can probably do all that via the PC also while logged into your Gmail account > Contacts. I believe there's a way to then convert all contacts to Google contacts...may be even done automatically not sure...and at that point, they should sync with your Android device. Might be a couple extra steps in there if using the PC route. I haven't done that in several years since Android/Google simplified the contacts issue by ditching locally stored contacts.

Battery life is great, don't worry about that.

yes.... sorry...... I completely glossed over the battery life concern portion of the post

you wont find another phone with better battery life on the market today (*assuming all things equal).........even the motorolas that everyone seems to laud so highly cant compete without tweaking to lack of usefulness

if setup properly there is no reason this phone cant remind of you of the days of dumbphone/nokia battery life...... I tend to put mine on the charger at the end of my 2nd day and it still has 30% or more

I consider myself a heavy user and I find myself with 35-40% left even if ive used it for about 4.5-5 hours on screen time.

I donno about battery life .... i am always on wifi or data ... after charging to 100 percent if i start using the battery goes down rapidly.... i don't know whether it's device problem or what battery life is some thing over to ponder but other than that the phone is overall nice

Are there any specific settings to improve battery life ,,,i dont on any auto sync and my screen brightness is low .......only thing is that my wifi or data will always be on

One thing that would help is if you could drain the battery almost completely, through your normal usage, and post a screen shot of what is being used the most. You'll find that under Settings - Battery. That way we can get a better feel for what is draining it.
In addition, there's a few tips in this post about battery management:

Like others have said, the battery life on this phone is insane. The Note 3 is probably the only one with marginally better battery life.

Yeah I'd say so. It can vary but I figure roughly 1,2,3 for this phone. 1 day for heavier usage, 2 days for moderate usage and up to near 3 days with very light usage.

The issue there is that people's definition of light, moderate and heavy can vary greatly and we're all running different apps and in some cases different OS or builds. But that's my rough calculation to give an idea of what this phone can do.

It is plenty good, yes. Which begs me to ask, what phone did you come from, where 28 hour usage is enough to concern you about it? Granted I come from the Thunderbolt and Nexus, both of which were notorious for less than ideal battery life. But I can't think of any phone where I would pick up a new phone, get 28 hours and go "man, I dunno if this is gonna work". So I'm just curious :)
