So I've done browsing to see if this problem has been resolved, and it doesn't seem like it has been.
So i have a bunch of contacts tied into my "contacts" on my note 3, and had the same issue on my old note 2 and previous phones. they are not skype contacts as i have already uninstalled skype to see if they were somehow connected ... they arent.
my only guess is they are a bunch of random people i randomly followed on google+ a few years ago, but i just completely deactivated my + account and they are still there!
no idea where else these could come from, cuz the only info on them is a picture, name, and their google link. any further suggestions? please?

i was able to hide them from showing up in my contacts when opened, but if i go to add somebody to my contacts, they are all there as "existing".

I had this same problem, and it turns out that I had them backed up in my google account. I signed into gmail, clicked on the drop down menu next to Gmail (on the left just above compose), selected contacts, then clicked other contacts (which is a drop down menu if you hover over circles). There I found a ton of email addresses from craigslist people I had emailed, skype contacts etc. I was able to check the box of those I wished to delete, then go up to more and select delete. Hope that helps. Or hinders in the case that just maybe I have no idea what you were actually talking about, and I'm WAY off base. :)
