VZW, Tethering & the GN2

This is not true; I use foxi on my razr and having a tired plan it is perfectly acceptable. I do not have root on the razr. The folks over at xda (i think) reported foxi worked on the note ii but it will give a warning because officially it does not support jellybean. However those reports predate verizon version. I do not own the note ii so cannot comment specifically on verizon version. Note that the newest version of foxi requires $$ for unlimited use also there is a second program (pda something) that is very similar but more expensive but said to be more full featured. Also jellybean has a built in hotspot feature (no clue if verizon version removed it; but if they did I would drop the fcc a note as verizon is not suppose to inhibit hotspot usage for tiered plans.

Yes. The only way to tether without paying for the carrier fee is through root.

I just switched yesterday to a “share everything plan” which enables you to use the built-in hotspot on the GN2 w/o any additional monthly fee (VZW). I had been using pdanet (usb) for years and foxfi when I wanted to use wifi. Both worked no problem. But, since getting the GN2, I have been desperately trying to tether it to my work computer using Foxfi and pdanet so here is what my experience was.

PDAnet: For some reason pdanet would not work (win xp). I freaked. Thought it was because the computer did not recognize the phone as a “mass storage” device.” There are a lot of posts about this issue relating to JB but I had no problem getting it to work on my laptop at home (win 7) as a “media” device so that may not be the issue.

Foxfi: Foxfi on the GN2 worked on the office computer but it was sketchy --sometimes I couldn’t get it on. But when it connecte it was fine. Searching the web, others were having the same on/off problems. The foxfi developer comments in the play store say that it is incompatible with JB! Not really true because many have it working. The devs have increased the return time to 14 days for the paid version (~$6.95) because of these issues.

Bottom line is I have no doubt I would have gotten both working on my GN2 at the office if I had needed to ( no root). So I would say give the Foxfi free version a go. Works flawlessly and ~30 secs to set up with encryption. Also, as I am sure many of you know even though foxfi and pdanet fly under the radar, all three above will show up as data usage.
Hope this helps some.

I can confirm that FoxFi successfully works on my VZW Note 2. Requires some tinkering - specifically, once you turn FoxFi on, you then need to configure the Mobile Hotspot prompt that appears in the notification window. Once you do that, FoxFi will work without a problem.

If you don't configure it twice (once in FoxFi and then again in the Mobile Hotspot prompt), it will not work.

Anyone........?

Works beautifully on my stock, unrooted VZW N2. WiFi hot spot in home with FoxFi app is WPA2 selectable and can be blocked to public users.

Linked two laptop computers and use them all day on unlimited plan. Way faster (12.0 mbps) than my ATT Uverse (2.0 mbps on a good day) hard lined WiFi/modem/router connection.

I'm in a "fringe area" for all carriers. The 4GLTE WiFi hot spot connection works perfectly.

I have unlimited data.... What have you heard?

Some users say they have unlimited and it works great. Other users say they have unlimited and get the paywall so right now, to me, it seems inconsistent and potentially something Verizon will fix.

Hopefully the devs can get this squared away and something like OpenGarden WiFi or such work without a hitch. For now, I'll keep watching progress as I'd like the Note 2 but want the tethering capability.

Thanks to all the folks that have posted success with the hotspot. This has been one of my concerns towards buying the Note 2 since I want to keep unlimited data. I use WiFi Tether on my rooted Thunderbolt and it works flawlessly.
One other question - can you run the hotspot and still make a phone call without loosing the internet connection to connected devices?

You should check your facts before you tell someone something "matter of fact".

There is a app in the play store called FoxFi, you can use that to hotspot without any additional charge and without having to root your phone. In addition if you are on Verizon, the FCC ruled that Verizon cannot stop, prevent or do anything to customers to limit apps they can use to tether/hotspot for free.

Verizon's 4G LTE network is built on top of wireless bandwidth that Verizon bought from the government (specifically, the C Block of 700 MHz spectrum) a long time ago. That purchase came with a restriction called the Open Access Rule, which says anyone using it to provide service "shall not deny, limit, or restrict the ability of their customers to use the devices and applications of their choice on the licensee's C Block network." That means as long as you're a paying customer and using their equipment, Verizon can't keep you from spreading the wireless love to your iPad, your laptop, or any other device you own.

FOXFI won't work at all with 4.4 KIT KAT on Verizon.... at least if you have an unlimited data plan.
