WHY, HTC??!! WHY MUST YOU DESTROY A GREAT PHONE WITH THE WORST POWER BUTTON PLACEMENT IN HISTORY??!!

You guys remember that one person in high school you knew would have been perfect for you if only for that one little flaw they had; be it their teeth, nose, height or whatever? That's how i feel about this phone. It's fast, beautiful and perfect in every way, except for that one little flaw: THE POWER BUTTON!!!

Why would they put a power button ON TOP of an enormous phone and not, say, on the side where your thumb and index finger is? You better have a giant hand of you hope to use it single-handedly. The rest of us are left awkwardly clutching the top half of the phone, feeling for a button that's FLUSHED INTO to the phone. Good luck feeling for it in your pocket or gloves on, and if you got a case on, forget it.

Also, why would they make it the ONLY way to turn the phone on? That button's gonna get destroyed in a year or so, and with my luck, probably after the warranty expires. No home button option? No screen tap option? Nope.

I've tried some of the p-sensor apps available, but none seems to work well with the One. P-sensor range is too small less sensitive than the S4. If anybody got a way around using the power button I'd love to hear it.

Problem is that when the phone is off it's not running, so no app can make it turn on.

I've heard that if you remove the battery and plug in the charger it'll bypass the charging screen and go to boot, but that, and removing the battery to turn it off, seems a lot of effort to fix a problem that's pretty rare.

Are you in the right thread?

Sorry, but with stock HTC AT&T ROM there is no way to turn the phone on except with the power button. Dibblebill's results with swiping the touchbar only seem to work with non-stock ROM's.

There might be some cases that put a more prominent power button over the rather flush built in one to make turning it on easier; but if the button breaks the phone is going to be useless until you get it fixed.

Not to mention the power button is also the IR blaster.

Thank you for the clarification, as I didn't use the phone more than ~5 minutes before replacing the ROM.

This is all so depressing. I know theres a chance the power button won't die on us, but let's be realistic. I owned an iphone4 and ipod touch, and both of those has had button failures. There are also two buttons on those too, meaning each button probably received less punishment than the One's button, and they still failed. Why would I want to keep a phone when I might have to pay $100+ to fix a design flaw that isn't anybody's fault but HTC's.

Now I'm seriously considering trading the phone back in. Luckily, best buy gives you two weeks for that.

Wait, you can replace the ROM? Is it possible to turn the stock AT&T ROM into the ROM dibblebill mention earlier, therefore enabling the sliding gesture? I'm not quite sure what a ROM is actually, but is it possible?

Not so far as I know, because HTC's Sense UI is very closely integrated into Android itself. I run a homebrew Android OmniROM that can be found here. Click the link in my post signature for the m7att to see what it does. THe process to install custom ROM's and revert to factory is actually fairly easy on the One, but you DO lose HTC Sense by switching to other versions of Android.

this is so.. stupid.. i mean.. seriously.. what one person hates.. others like.. i personally hate the power button the side.. on S4, when using landscape.. playin games.. typing.. i hit power button.. which turns the screen off..

and how freakishly small are your hands.. that you cant get to the power button.. good gawsh.. i mean.. to return a phone.. because of power button location..

the all mighty.. and powerful iphone.. has a power button on top.. and one magic button on the screen.. that button goes out in more phones than anything.. but people love that thing.. lol..

cmon man.. seriously..
