Way back at the turn of the century I was heavily into the Pocket PC world. One of the holy grails of that tech accessories wise was finding a device charger that worked with regular AA batteries. PocketPC Techs met that challenge with the introduction of the Lil' Sync AA Battery Adapter. I'm happy to report that this little sweetheart works with our Note 3's. It's not the fastest way to charge this beast but its small size and ability to use off the shelf batteries is a god send in emergency situations. I haven't really completed testing yet but from 62% I went to 67% in about an hour with the battery temperature remaing at 70

Goal Zero has a kit that includes a solar panel, a AA or AAA battery charger and 4 rechargeable NiMH AA batteries. The battery pack is both a battery pack, and a battery charger. If you're in the sun a lot, you can also plug your phone into the USB port on the solar panel. Guide 10 Plus Solar Kit | Complete Solar Kits | Goal Zero
You can also put in regular AA batteries and use it like any other battery pack and charge your phone that way. Obviously you can't recharge the batteries of course.

Up until a few years ago I had one of the Energizer phone charges that used two AA batteries to charge my phone when I went on a yearly 10 day back country hunting trip. Problem was, I'd go through about $30 worth of batteries to keep my phone charged. I got one of the Goal Zero Kitts mentioned above for a Christmas present and absolutely love it. Even on day hikes in the mountains, I clip it to my day pack and plug it into my phone. Can run a nav app all day without running down the battery.
