Help Mobile Hot Spot not working on AT&T phone unlocked for Rogers

I have bought an AT&T Motorola Atrix and unlocked it so I can use it on the Rogers network in Canada. The phone and 3G is working just fine. I have the APN for Rogers entered.

When I try to activate the mobile hot spot I get a message "Account not set up for mobile hot spot" I checked with Rogers and my Rogers account is set up for Wifi tethering (Mobile hot spot) they suggested a new APN with "Internet.com" as the APN but this still did not work.

I have phoned Pure Mobile where I bought the phone, no help there, I have phoned AT&T and they just patched me over to Rogers. I Phoned Rogers, they gave me the new APN which did not work. I phoned Motorola and they said to call AT&T. Each time I phone I need to explain a long drawn out explanation, and the support people just don`t seem to get a grasp of the issue.

Any suggestions

If I understand the function correctly, the hotspot will only enable with a set flag on the account from the carrier.

Since this is an AT&T branded phone, it will only work with an AT&T account that has that enabled, even if the phone is unlocked. It does not have the ability/programming to understand the account flags for other carriers.

In short, the mobile hotspot should not work unless you are on the carrier the phone is branded for. -- Again, that is my understanding of how the feature was setup.

There are 2 terms that need to be understood here.
UNLOCKED - a phone that was branded with a specific carrier and "Unlocked" so that it would function on other networks. Unlocking does not always enable all features across all carriers.

UNBRANDED - this is a stock phone, direct from the manufacturer that has not been tweaked for any one carrier. All functions should work regardless of the carrier. These phones are typically much more expensive since there is NO carrier subsidy to offset the price.

Just because you unlock the phone does not unlock all of the features. This has been an issue as long as phones have been being unlocked. People complain that an unlocked 3G phone from T-Mobile only get's 2G on AT&T, or that a 3G AT&T phone only get's 2G on T-Mobile. It's because they use different 3G systems that (until the HSPDA 4G) were not cross compatible (different radio frequencies).

I would suggest you try one of the 3rd party tethering apps from the market. Or, sell it and purchase an Unbranded phone.

ATT frequencies are the same as Rogers, Tmobile uses a subset so a 3 band Tmobile won't work as well on a 4-band ATT/Rogers gsm phone.

The branding may be the reason that it doesn't seem to work. I have an unlocked ATT atrix on Rogers and can't get it to work even tho' easytether software does allow me to tether to a laptop ok.
Please post the APN for Rogers and I'll try as well.
I would like to use my Xoom tablet with the phone as well.....

I've ordered a mobile hotspot that is supposed to tether with the phone and provide internet-- I hope it works and will let you know..
Thnks

PS: how bout flashing with unbranded firmware? Even tho' rooted I ocouldn't get it to work.-- but I don't know if I had the correct APN. I've upgraded to 2.3.4 and find I'm no longer rooted so can't keep testing till I unroot again.

Yes everything else seems to work ok, running 2.3.4
It was suggested I debrand the phone, which seems to be the answer. From what I see I can do it myself, but I am unsure of how reliable that would be and what are the risks?
Any suggestions on good Debra ding sites?

In the 6 years I've dealt with Smartphones, I've NEVER seen anyone successfully "de-brand" a phone. (That includes BlackBerry, Android, Windows Mobile...)
One of two things happen...
1) It only appears de-branded (Logo's go away), but all of the functions and limits placed upon it by the carrier that had it branded are still there.
2) It bricks. - And I mean, Hard Brick, no-reflashing, sell it for spare parts BRICK.

Like I said, your BEST bet is to sell the phone on eBay then buy an UNbranded phone. Not DEbranded, that's one someones tried to take the branding off of. I mean, a phone that was never branded to a carrier in the first place direct from Motorola, or a certified vendor. = $$$$$

I purchased the Atrix as well and have the same issues with Hotspot and Tethering...
I am with Telus and I have spent numerous hours being shuffled back and forth between Telus, Motorola and AT&T to no avail.

If you came up with ANYTHING that might work please leave me a brief description of the fix, or even a link to any page or App which might prove helpful...
