Maximum SD card storage on the Hudl.

I have seen some mixed messages online about how much storage you can add to the Hudl or which SD brands work. So I thought I'd clarify the matter for you and give you the information you need if you want max out your storage options.

As Tesco state the maximum is 32GB, that's the upper limit for the SDHC specification. Any SDHC card upto that size should work fine.

However, going beyond that limit requires a different specification card - SDXC. This specification allows theoretically up to 2TB, not that you will find those in your local Tesco :)

I CAN CONFIRM that the Sandisk Ultra 64GB MicroSD UHS Class 1 (or U1) meaning a transfer rate of upto 10 MB/s DOES WORK. They are grey and red in colour. You will find them for a very reasonable price nowadays from reputable dealers - always be on your guard for fake cards.

This means you can carry a whopping 80GB of storage in your Tesco Hudl!! I carry my entire music collection on mine, my entire photo album, my eBook library and various TV shows and movies at any one time.

Some caveats - If I remember I did have to reformat the card on the Hudl. Also, due to the sheer number of photos in my photo library, the Gallery app did crash the first time I opened it. Also the Launcher was sluggish. It was FINE after a reboot. I leave my card in permanently.

Having music/photos etc stored on the cloud is fine, but having a copy of everything already on your Hudl is even better, especially if you take it out and about.

So I hope that information helps fellow Hudlers out there, and helps you to get more out of your device. ;-)

And as far as brand goes, only SanDisk/Toshiba (a joint venture) and Samsung manufacture the chips. Everyone else buys chips from SanDisk or Samsung - or uses discarded cards. Since the card can be programmed (there's a CPU in there), they can take a 4GB card and program it to say that it's a 32GB card. Then once you put 4GB of data on it, you have troubles.

It's difficult enough not buying counterfeits (they make some pretty close ones these days), but buying anything but SanDisk or Samsung is buying something you know nothing about. It's a microSD card case with - you hope - something inside it.

I was in Staples today. At the checkout counter, they had 8GB SanDisk Cruisers for about $850. In a basked under that they had Kingston 8GB memory sticks for $7. There's a reason for that.

Stick with SanDisk or Samsung.

That's true, good information - thanks.

I too was stung by a fake 32gb card off eBay, it I think it wasn't much more than 2gb if I recall.

Needless to say, get your card from a reliable retailer and be sure it's genuine. If the price is too good to be true, it's probably for a reason. I know mine is genuine because of where I bought it from, but I did fill it up and verified the data to be sure.

Thanks for stressing that point. ;)

Oh my duff card was ages ago, the seller vanished I think so I binned it. But I probably would not recommend getting one off eBay though, SD cards are one thing I would not get there.

And about the card format you asked about on the other thread. I think the Hudl may have formatted it. If I did it myself, I may have a Linux format on it as I don't use Windows. I honestly can't remember, sorry, I was so excited to get it and fill it up, some of the details didn't register.
