Has anyone used one of these?

I was considering using an old windows XP tower with my 500GB external drive or getting an OTG cable but then I found this. It looks pretty cool. I would use google drive but my upload speed at home is 768kbps on a good day. Another option would be to go to the library about 45 minutes away and upload there.

I'm trying to ween myself off of my laptop and try a tablet instead and I love the Nexus but I've accumulated over 70GB of videos, music, pictures, and documents over the years! I know there are other tablets with sd card slots but the Nexus seems to be the best bang for my buck just like my Moto G

Have not used one but it has a lot of options. The app store has tons of apps to organize, read and transfer with OTG. Let us know how it works, if you get it.

According to a note in the Description section, root and the stickmount app are required to make it work on the Nexus 7. I wonder if this would work on non-rooted N7s using the Nexus Importer app?

According to a lot of the reviews Nexus media importer works without root. You must have the USB stick or SD card formatted to fat32 to import and export. NTFS works with import mode only. That's no big deal to me since I don't have any files over 4GB. However I did have to download a program to format my external drive to fat32 since windows didn't have the option.

I was going to order it but it was to late to cancel my OTG cable and this adapter to power my 500GB external drive. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005M0ICG2/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If it works I'll just stick with the cables.

I just saw a Pogoplug tonight at Walmart while shopping.

I'd never heard of one before so I decided to give it a try. It is just a hub you plug into your wireless router and it has a USB port as well as regular and micro SD slots. It lets you create your own personal cloud. I connected my USB hard drive to it and signed up with the Pogoplug app and was up and running in no time.

The only thing I don't like is that it has no option to upload an entire folder. To do that there are only two options, which are to compress the folder into a zip file or create a new folder with the same name on the external drive and upload files to it one at a time. The zip option is definitely the fastest method but the downside is the Pogoplug app lacks the ability to unzip files unless they are downloaded to your device. So, for example, if I upload a zip file of a music album I can't stream it I must download it and unzip it first. All the albums that were already on the drive can be streamed since they aren't zipped.

Videos also won't play unless transferred to my device as well unless I'm doing something wrong. It does have the option to automatically upload all of your videos and photos but not music.

In conclusion it works great for backup purposes but it has a lot of quirks. I'll probably end up returning it but it was worth a try.

I'm using one by www.meenova.com that was about $15 shipped. It works with Nexus Media Importer and I'm not rooted. I tried it for the first time today and its.probably similar to that. I was able to play video from the micro SD card as well as.copy to and from the device.

Pretty cool. I wish it had a card slot on the device itself though.

That looks interesting. That's my one gripe with the nexus 7 is no SD slot but in this price range I can't find a better tablet.

I just got my Nexus 7 and love it. I actually switched from iPhone/iPad in the last week when I got a Moto X. I was so impressed with Android I wanted a tablet too This little tablet is pretty cool.

That's exactly why I switched. I was so impressed with my Moto G, I wanted to convert to a full Android experience. I never gave a second thought about my 70+ GB of music, photos, videos, and documents that I had backed up on my external drive. With the Moto G it was no big deal because I could simply connect it to my laptop and switch out my music and videos. Google cloud just isn't feasible unless you have a high upload speed and although an USB OTG cable will solve that, who's to say the OTG functionality won't be broken with the next update?

At this point I'm considering driving 45 minutes to the nearest library with a decent upload speed for my initial upload and for future uploads I'll just start them before bed since they are most likely just going to be music and photos.

Well I'm at the library now and even here I'm going to have to come back several days in a row because even here it's only around 3Mbps. I may try the bigger branch tomorrow. The good thing is that I got 50GB of Google Drive for 2 years with my Moto G and another 100 with a Chromebook that I returned...but apparently they let me keep the 100GB!
