Help 64 GB micro SD card problems

Hello,

I have had my phone since April. At first I had a 32gb microSD and it seemed to work fine, but I needed more space for my music. I returned it for a 64gb one.

This one had problems from the start. The card would become corrupted and folders would be renamed to start with the letter μ, or mu. Songs wouldn't play and tags couldn't be read.

I told Sandisk about the problem and they told me to return the card for a replacement. I got the replacement, and I think it worked fine for a while, but now most of the music doesn't play. The tags are unread (unknown artist) and they don't play.

Sometimes I will put the sd card in my computer, copy the mp3s, put the card back in my phone and they play fine. But then I'll sync new songs to the card this way and when I put it back in, most files don't work.

I've even had situations where everything works fine, and then one day it all stops working properly.

Now I should mention I am a Linux user, and the card is formatted Fat32. I can open all the files on the card from my computer, all the tags are intact and they play fine. So, in this case, it doesn't seem to be the card that's not working, but rather the phone's ability to read it.

I have started in recovery mode to clear my phone's cache, I have reformatted the card, and this hasn't helped. I am getting very frustrated so help is much appreciated. Thanks so much.

Hi, since I posted this thread, I have sent my phone back to Samsung to repair, along with some electrical and headphone issues. Samsung claims to have fixed all the problems, and indeed the other two issues are resolved; however, I immediately copied all my music back onto my sd card, popped it in the phone, and... right off the bat, most of my tags don't show up, and my playlists are empty.

So, I've replaced the SD card, had the manufacturer troubleshoot the card reader, and I am at my wit's end.

I should mention that my card is fat32 and my desktop, from whence I'm copying my music, is linux and on an ext4 file system. It occured to me that this might be the problem, but I've heard your SD should be fat32 for android.

Anyway, any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I've been having major issues with Sandisk in general lately. I bought a flash drive that literally froze the computer by plugging it in.

I bough this Samsung Micro for the S3, and it works FLAWLESSLY. They do sell a 64GB version which I'm sure is just as good. It's a class 10 which is very fast 48mb/sec which is pretty fast for a sd card. I recommend the Samsung brand for the S3, and S4. You'll have no issues.

It seems you need the special Samsung memory card for an S3.

Indeed!!!

Amazon.com: Samsung Plus 32 GB MicroSDHC Class 10 UHS-1 48MB/s Memory Card (MB-MPBGB): Computers & Accessories

also comes in 64GB, but the 32GB comes in the retail packaging, and is GREAT, and 32GB is plenty of room. Don't forget the S3 is 16GB of internal which about 11GB is available to the user so if you use internal for apps, and external for everything else. You should never have space issues.

Thanks so much for the replies. Minimike says not to use Fat32, nigsy recommends his tutorial, which formats to Fat32. nigsy, I already have my card in FAT32, formatted in Ubuntu, so I don't know that your thread is going to help. Thanks, though.

Minimike, what filesystem should I use, if not FAT32? I just formatted the card exFAT in the phone itself, so now the challenge is getting Ubuntu to read and write exFAT.

I tried formatting the card ext4, thinking that Android is linux-based and shouldn't have a problem with the format. I was wrong, though -- my phone couldn't recognize the card after that.

3x5, I think you may have mistaken the KitKat update, Otherwise can you please post your source on that.

Only reason I say that is the S3 not too long ago just got a large update from 4.1 to 4.3. To have 4.4 KK in the works just seems extremely unlikely.

EDIT - I may stand corrected. Did a quick search of it..And there is a lot of information floating around that 4.4 KitKat will be landing on the S3 soon. Wonder if it has anything to do with how screwed up the 4.3 update went. No complaints about this though if true.
