Help Lifelong iphone user thinking about switching

The major steps to rooting break down like this:

Unlocking the boot loader: THIS WILL RESET YOUR DEVICE

Installing custom recovery: This allows you to make nandroid backups, which saves a snapshot of your device in exactly the way it is at that moment

Flashing either rooted ROM or the files needed to root the stock ROM

You can stop after any point. In my opinion if you're thinking about rooting you should at least do step one as soon as possible.

The process of installing a ROM wipes your data, but then you restore it from a previous backup and you're good to go in no time

OK, I've been doing some reading and I think I might like to at least keep the door open for the possibility of installing a custom rom so in that case should I root the phone as soon as I get it so I won't lose anything? Also, if I root it and don't do anything for a few weeks, months etc. and then decide to install a rom later will I lose anything or does it not work that way?

Yes rooting the phone and installing a custom recovery first is the best way to go. Even if you never install a custom ROM, you will be able to make a stock nandroid backup of your phone and will have access to a lot of root only apps.

I would suggest starting with a looking at AdAway. Then if you want to try you luck at customizing you phone check out Xposed.
